Desperately seeking Grange Farm Sheffield
« on: Thursday 06 December 07 22:23 GMT (UK) »
I would love to see an old photo or print of Grange Farm,Carter Knowle,Sheffield.
My ancestor farmed here in the 1860's. It was once countryside but has now been swallowed up by urban sprawl.

Is there anyone out there who could point me in the right direction to obtain my quest? :)

It was on what I think is now Carter Knowle Road just down from "The Prince of Wales" Pub.

Hi Adelphi,

I Concur with Linda. Theres a good photo of a Grange farm,
but it lists it as being on Stumperlowe Hall Road.
No mention of Carter Knowles but then again I'm afraid I dont know
    Sheffield.

The only farm picture at Carter Knowles is listed as Knab Farm or
       Needhams farm.

I've just checked with my street atlas and I'm afraid Stumperlowe Hall road
is quite a way from Carter Knowles so it's very unlikely to be that one.

Many thanks for your reply.
I had seen a photo of Knab Farm when I was looking at old photos of the area, and now wonder if Knab Farm could have been called "Grange Farm" in the 1860's.
I will have to investigate further.

Hi Adelphi,
The Godfrey Edition 1905 map of Nether Edge has a Grange Farm just off Carterknowle Rd ( Carter Knowle Lane on the 1905 map ). It is on the opposite side to what is usually considered to be the Knab Farm area. It is also shown as Grange Farm on the modern AZ maps.
There are currently some old buildings converted to private dwellings just below the Carterknowle Rd/Springfield Ave junction which may well be the old farm buildings.

Many thanks for your reply. I have now confirmed that the buildings opposite the Knabb Farm Area are in fact the old Grange Farm that has been converted.
I have now received a photo of this building for my collection, but still would like an old photo or print of how it looked before conversion as it is hard to distinguish how it was in the 1860's.
