Robert McDowell - arrived Australia in 1838, who is his father?
« on: Sunday 09 December 07 11:17 GMT (UK) »
My Great Grandfather was Robert McDOWELL.  I have very little on this man.  Here is what I do have.

According to the book "Winds Of Change" ( Edited by Bess HANSFORD, PUB 1988),  about the people & places around the town of Mumbil in NSW, Australia:

1) He was born 1836 at "Royal Oak" Carlow

2) Arrived in Australia in 1838, accompanied by his mother Margaret ??? presumably McDOWELL at the time

3) Robert McDOWELL married 1859 Frances Elizabeth BAILEY

From NSW BMD site:

Marriage certificate detail for Robert McDOWELL:
Reg No: 1859/003123
Date/Place: 18 October 1859/Burrandong
Names: Robert McDOWELL & Frances Elizabeth BAILEY
Conugal Status: Batchelor/Spinster

 Death Certificate of Robert McDOWELL:
Reg No: 1915/017156
Name: Robert McDOWELL
Age: 80 yrs
Name of Father: unknown
Fathers Occupation: Governor of Gaol
Mothers name: Margaret (surname unknown)
Where born and how long in Australian colonies/states: Ireland/76 yrs in NSW

Any help finding Robert and Margaret's roots would be greatly appreciated.  It must be said that this is my first foray into Irish records.

Same message is at http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=272913.new#new

Many thanks in anticipation

hi there
Royal oak in Carlow is just outside bagenalstown. maybe you could take a look at the irish genealogy project(IGP), I can't seem to reach it tonight.
http://www.igp-web.com/
If you just follow the links through to Bagenalstown parish baptisms, you might strike lucky.
I hope this has been some help.
all the best

hi again
maybe try this link
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlcar2/Dunleckney_index.htm
it's the same page, but a different way.
I took a look, this is a catholic parish register, but there are no mcdowells on it, would he have been church of ireland? Then I thought that maybe that if he arrived in oz with his mother, she may have given him her name? but there were no mcdowells for the mothers maiden name either.
I hope this is of some help

Hello Robert

I am also a descendant of Robert McDowell. There are quite a few of us since he and Frances Elizabeth Bailey had 14 children. I am a great-great grandson.
I have attached a scan of a document which I have explaining what is known to my family about his origins. It makes interesting reading.

I also have a couple of photos of Robert McDowell and Frances Elizabeth Bailey.

I hope that this is of interest to you, perhaps we can exchange some further information.

Regards, Michael

From Slater's directory of 1846 - have a look at this link for Carlow town : Page 361

see under the section captioned 'Public Buildings, Offices, Institutions &c'

 County Gaol, Barracks Street
 Governor - Mr. Robert McDowell

presumably Robert's (c1836) father ?

Some parish records for Co. Carlow are due to be added to the irish Genealogy website at :  http://www.irishgenealogy.ie/    might be worth keeping an eye on that to see if Roberts baptism is included.

Hello Michael,
I have not been on this site for quite a few years, sadly so.  Do you have a copy of the complete text of this page that you have shown?  Or a book title, or webpage of this information that would allow me to read the full story?

I hope, that you are well and enjoying life.
