Hi Annie
Great picture of the house, if only the gamekeeper was standing outside .  :)

He  was Robert Stevens, bapt Jan 1838 in Cheddington, married to Ann Carter, in 1860.

He was Gamekeeper in 1881 census, living with his wife in the Gamekeepers lodge.
In 91 he was back to being and Ag. Lab, and in 1901, a Poultry breeder living in the delightfully named Bottom End.

Fred

Should have read this properly!

My grandmother was Jane Louisa Stevens born Tingewick 1880ish....Any relation??? I haven't done her side yet....

Ah well...just seemed a bit of a coincidence...Brother in law of Jane Louisa gets a job a Wing after coming out of the army...and she is a Stevens as well as the gamekeeper...

Hi

Have you tried looking for Gamekeepers' Deputations in Buckingham Archives?
I have ancestors who were gamekeepers in Northamptonshire for the Earl of Westmoreland and others.  In Northampton archives found the Deputations (registers of all gamekeepers in the county who had to be licenced and sworn in every year) with lots of information, i.e., name, where they lived, status, who they worked for, the area covered, and year.

Wished I had taken a digital camera with me, I ended up with writer's cramp  ::)

Regards

Hi everyone - I am the person behind the Wing One Place Study website you all have such kind words about. I know that Fred has already been in touch with me, but if any of you haven't been in touch and let me know who your families are in Wing then please do so, I'd love to hear from you and may even have further information for you as copyright restrictions mean I can't put everything online! I have STEVENS from Wing in my line too, but c.1800.

I'm squirrelling away all the pieces of information I can get as to who worked for the Rothschilds at Ascott and in what capacity - eventually this will make it on to the website - so I'd particularly like to hear more about those chauffeurs and the like! My ancestor allegedly worked with the polo ponies after WW1 but I haven't found evidence as yet that they even had polo at Ascott.....
