DOWZARD
« on: Tuesday 18 December 07 12:07 GMT (UK) »
Have Susan Dowzard my great grandmother, marrying John Edward Boshell at St. Thomas' church City of Dublin, 14th July 1874.

Susan's parents were Edward Dowzard, porter at the Bank of Ireland and Anne nee Hollywood.
Edward died 20th August 1889 aged 70, Anne died 4th March 1902 aged 84. Lizzie [Elizabeth] Dowzard died 25th December 1931. This information is from the grave record at Mount Jerome cemetery.

I have no idea who Edward's parents were. Any suggestions as to how I could find out?

Also, have found Elizabeth in Dublin 1911 census, mistranscribed as Dourgard.

Anne's brother and sister David and Esther Hollywood and daughter Elizabeth were in the 1901 census at 28 Cork St. No sign of Anne. She may have been in hospital She died in the South Union Hospital.

hi kooky, just out of curiosity to see why elizabeth ended up
on the 1911 census as 'dourgard' I had a look at the actual form,
seems to have been because elizabeth had an unusual way of writing
the letter 'z' they saw it as the letter 'g'.
one to watch for in future eh?

Hi

Have you written or contacted the Bank of Ireland to see whether they hold old records.  You may learn the EXACT spelling for this surname and possibly something else.  There are so many variations if would be worth checking this out.

Cheers

Louise

Louise, a couple of years ago, when I was in Dublin, I called in to the bank and chatted for some time to a very nice man about this. He took me on a guided tour of the rooms you are not usually allowed in. He introduced me to the porter on duty and he told me all about his duties He gave me the name and address of a lady he said would help me. I wrote to her but she never replied! :'(
I could try again I suppose ::)

hi kooky, yes it looked like that to me too but only because I
have become familiar with the name, looking at it again the letter z
could look like the old gaelic form of the letter g.
as there are only 2 more families with the surname I could understand
how the mistake was made but they could have seen what the letter
really was by looking at the letter z in her first name.

Anne,
I've printed off the other Dowzards from the 1911 census. I might try to follow them up when I am next in Dublin. Sometime in spring next year I hope.
Season's Greetings to you!

Does anybody know of any DOWZARDs in Ireland?
Family myth has it that Dowzard is a Hugenot name.
Can someone help?

Dowzard is not a name I'm familiar with but I'm pretty sure I came across a Lizzie or Lizzie May Dowzard on the 1911 census.  The census form was for a household in Lucan Co. Dublin (pretty sure the family name was Benson but not 100% certain) and I think Lizzie was a servant, religion CofI and possibly born in Dublin city.   I don't think a name search will find her because the name was wrongly transcribed, but I don't think it was Dourgard as you mentioned.  I noticed it because it's such an unusual name.....perhaps this Lizzie was a relative of your Dowzards.

That information won't really help your research but I thought you might like to know anyway.
