Changes at GRO
« on: Sunday 02 January 05 23:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone

Just saw this posted to the Fife Rootsweb Board please read its about changes they are planning to make.

"The biggest shake-up in the history of births, deaths and marriages is being
planned by the Scottish Executive.
The overhaul of the law will mean that in future people will be able to marry on
a cruise round the Scottish coast, and that anyone with a Scottish connection
living abroad will be able to register their children in Scotland.
The proposal is also set to help the SFA and SRU search for players eligible to
represent Scotland at football or rugby.
A Book of Scottish Connections is to be set up, in which people from around the
world with a Scottish connection can arrange for a birth, marriage or death to
be recorded.
The move comes thanks to the boom in genealogy, with people all over the world
seeking their roots.
An all-Scotland website is also to be established, which will advertise all
forthcoming marriages in Scotland.
The draft Registration Services (Scotland) Bill also proposes online
registration of births, marriages and deaths.
The draft Bill is published today by the Registrar General for Scotland, Duncan
Macniven, as the registration system in Scotland celebrates its 150th. birthday.
Consultation will end in March"

Is the concept of "Scottish Connection" desribed anywhere that you know? I just wondered what proof would be required - Would hate it to end up like the submitted  entries on the IGI many of which are wishful thinking.

All very confusing - just when I had gotten used to the idea that being born in New Zealand was the qualification to play for Scotland at Rugby, then  they ruin it all. Perhaps they should offer cruises around the coast free to expectant mums from Brazil or Argentina, on a  specially equipped ship ::) ::) ::)
Southern or Southan [Hereford , Monmouthshire & Glos], Jenkins, Meredith and Morgan [Monmouthshire and Glos.], Murrill, Damary, Damry, Ray, Lawrence [all Middx. & London], Nethway from Kenn or Yatton. Also Riley and Lyons in South Africa and Riley from St. Helena.

No, no Falkyrn - I meant that they might find some future soccer players that way. I think the last one of any use was Rob Roy of the Rovers ::)

Rob Roy was pretty nifty on his feet .....

Personally I preferred Jim Baxters game of keepy uppy when Scotland downed the self proclaimed "World Champions" in early 1967 ........

But to get this thread back on topic ...  ;D

One other proposal which may assist future family historians or prove an absolute nightmare for them .... is that Births Marriages and Deaths could be registered from anywhere not necessarily at the location or area where the event took place.
