Move from Canada to Curragh
« on: Monday 24 December 07 08:42 GMT (UK) »
My g grandfather Thomas Mitchell b 1840 in England, was in Quebec around 1861-1865, he married Margaret and had two sons there Thomas 1863 and John 1864.  the family then moved back to Devon England, James born 1866 and then to Curragh, Charles born 1869.

I wondered if anyone could throw some light on why he would move around so much, could he have been in the armed forces and if so how could I find out which regiment he was with?

Suspect the Army- possibly Royal Artillery?. Have traced a military family (R.A.) and they went from Ireland to England to Malta to Canada to England, etc.

Most certainly Army. The recommended next step would be to search for his soldier's papers at the National Archives. In order to do this you need to know his regiment (probably) and roughly when he was discharged.

This can often be achieved from a mixture of BMD and census records. Have you succeeded in finding the marriage and births in the military registers and if so do you have the certificates?

No I have no marriage or birth certs.

Not really sure how to go about getting them as the marriage was in Canada and the births were all over the place!!

Could this be son Charles?:
Charles Mitchell born 24 Sept.1868 Co.Kildare, son of Thomas Mitchell & Margaret Kerr.
Have you found the family in 1881 census (an other census records)?

Yes, I think that must be him - how did you find that?
I knew his mother was Margaret but didn't know her surname but it fits nicely.

By 1881 they were back in Bradford W Yorkshire which is where I got mum's name and the rough date of birth for Charles.  Just need to find out why he moved around so much, I assume he was in the army but would love to find out which regiment.

What was Thomas' occupation in 1881?
Found Charles' birth on IGI by doing parent search- other children not listed.

I'm working today and so don't have my family details with me but he was working in the woollen mill trade as I recall.
