Gawber Church Records, Barnsley.
« on: Thursday 27 December 07 15:02 GMT (UK) »

Just spotted this website for the Church of St. Thomas, Gawber nr. Barnsley.

The Burial records for 1852-1999   and Baptism records for 1849-1873
     are accessible.

The church covers the area's, Gawber, Higham, Barugh Green, Redbrook &
      Wilthorpe.

It's a well laid out site with a lot of other interesting features.

        Tomkin :)

Hi Anne,

     http://applications.barnsley.gov.uk/service/registrars/

A BMD index is being prepared by the FHS of Barnsley.

It's in it's infancy at the moment but it might be useful to
check every so often and see what is available.

       Tomkin :) :)

Hi Anne,

The earliest I have is Joseph CROSSLAND son of Joseph but I don't have a  date or place of birth as I can't find him on 1851 census :(

He married Mary MERRIWEATHER in 1846 in Darton, Yorkshire and they had two children - Amanda b. 1848 in Kitroyd and Anthony Merriweather CROSSLAND b. 1853 in Gawber.  Anthony's baptism is on the website Tomkin gave but transcribed as CARLSLAND.

Joseph died in Barnsley Reg District in 1857 but does not appear on the list of Gawber burials as I hoped he might  :'(

Do you have CROSSLAND connections?

Many years after this post I discovered that Joseph CROSSLAND died on 19 February 1857 in the Lundhill colliery explosion. His body was finally recovered in May 1857 and he was buried in one of the mass graves in Darfield Churchyard.
