Ann Sheret Birth Montrose
« on: Saturday 05 January 08 06:16 GMT (UK) »
I have been unable to confirm the birth of Ann Sheret in 1836 in Montrose. Father William Sheret, Police officer and mother Margaret (nee Dundas). She appears as a 5 year old in the 1841 census along with her mother and brother Andrew.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much Ev.   Yes I have those details re Helen and Andrew's births and also the marriage of William and Margaret. Thanks for the 1851 notes. Thats great.
However although Ann appears on the 1841 and 1851 census there seems to be no birth or christening record for her.
She was my g/grandmother.  I guess I'll just have to resign to the fact that her birth may not have been recorded for some reason.
Blessings on ya!

I see from ev's reply that Ann Sheret was born in St Cyrus.  This was in Kincardineshire at that time, but is now part of Aberdeenshire.

You could try asking the question on the Kincardineshire forum, saying that you have tried here first.

I was also born in St Cyrus, and I'm sure I can remember my Father speaking about some Sheret family that lived there in his time.  My Father was born in Montrose, and moved to St Cyrus about 1920 or thereabout. We moved to Arbuthnott about 1952 when I was about 4 or 5.

Hi

Do you know whether or not the family were Church of Scotland ? If not that would explain why no OPR for the baptisms on Scotland's People. Pre 1855 that's all SP holds. The records for other churches including Free and United Presbyterians are all held by National Archives Scotland but tho digitised not online am afraid.

it is worth contacting NAS to see if they can help

http://www.nas.gov.uk/

Tho odd that two of her siblings appear on Scotland's People.

born 31/03/1839 SHERET ANDREW  Parents WILLIAM SHERET& MARGARET DUNDAS  Montrose

born 01/10/1837 SHERET HELEN  Parents WILLIAM SHERET& MARGARET DUNDAS F Montrose

But it could just be they changed allegiance church wise. There was a lot of upheaval in the Scottish churches around this time with merging and splintering off.

The attached shows what I mean! A real dog's brekkie!

Thanks for your reply.  Ann Sheret married William Baird in the Church of Scotland in 1860 but I have no confirmation that her family were of that church.

Yes, St Cyrus is now Aberdeenshire, as is Banffshire and part of Morayshire.

Kincardinshire as a seperate county ceased to exist at regionalisation sometime in the 1970's, and became Kincardine & Deeside district of Grampian region.

When regionalisation was scrapped, which I think was sometime in the late 1990's, we were left with Aberdeenshire.

See attached Aberdeenshire website-

And my humble attempt  :O)

The only Ann Sheret born in Scotland (which appears to be recorded), between 1830 and 1836 was on 05 Nov 1833 to Alexander Sheret and Elizabeth Reid (from IGI).

In Montrose - (from Scotlands People - but have no credits).

If the 2 x census records are correct - this can't be your one - but a relative?

Regards,   Steve :O)
