mystery Highlander
« on: Monday 07 January 08 21:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
Happy New Year to you.

Who's our resident highlander expert on this board? I could do with a second opinion on this chap. I'm assuming from the wings that he's a musician of some sort, but any idea what sort?
And opinions as to regiment would be helpful too  ;D ;D

Cheers,
Neil

Hi Neil,

Is there any chance that you can do a high res scan of the collar badge, the shoulder and the sporran.

We might get a better chance from that. It seems to be a pretty sharp picture.

Hi Salty,
Yep, I'll see what I can do with that.
I can't rescan it personally as I don't have the original, but I'll ask

Cheers,
Neil

 :) Hi

He looks like a Queen's Own Cameron Highlander, and probably a drummer judging by the half plaid he is wearing as well as his epaulettes.

Hi Neil

Yes, your soldier is a drummer, I just found the article describing that the Drummers tunic was embellished with drummers' lace which was white worsted three quarters of an inch wide and woven with scarlet imperial crowns at just over an inch intervals (known as "crown and inch").  The collar had lace along the top and front, and, unlike the Foot Guards, had Regimental collar badges.

Does your soldier have a name?

 :) Good  photo Annie

Yes! he is a Cameron Highlander, though the young soldier on Neil's post appears to be of a later date than 1890, as he does not have the 'crown and inch' up the seam of the sleeve.

Hi  :)

Just carrying on the theme, our soldier is not a musician, he is a drummer in the Pipe band, thus an infanteer, who joined the QOCH regiment and subsequently became a Drummer, unlike the 'musicians' of the Military band who come into the regiment generally from Kneller Hall.

Photo looks to be around the 1905-10 era.  Could possibly be 2nd Battalion. His jacket is not a home service Full Dress type.  It looks like the lighterweight jacket worn abroad, perhaps India.

Hi Atom,
Thanks very much, all brilliant information.  :)
I had a suspicion he might be Camerons but wanted confirmation from someone who knows what they're talking about!

As I say, I was thinking 'musician' as well but couldn't see any clue to confirm drummer. Do I take it the drummer's tunic is easily distinguishable from a pipers (for those in the know)?

The lady who sent it to me also thinks (for family reasons) that is sometime between 1890s and about 1910. Sadly no definite name for him at this point.

Thanks again,
Neil
