Uniforn Identification
« on: Thursday 10 January 08 16:05 GMT (UK) »
This is a mystery photograph so I can't post it on WW1 or WW2 because I don't know which one it's from.
If anyone can give a location also that would be even better - if not I'll post it on the Photo board later.

I have absolutely no expertise in this matter at all, but you've had no replies so I thought I'd let you have my thoughts.
I think they look eastern european to me.  Do you know the names of the people?  I see the young chap has a bugle in his hand so I don't know if theat could help anyone.
Perhaps you could put the posting on the photo and restoration section as you might get an expert who could look at the dress style to try to get a date?

Cheers

Looks to me like he is carrying an instrument. A bugle perhaps?

Well it's deffo a bugle...But what of the rest of it???
Ummmmm.... my thoughts...as they come!

Mumsie... do you have any details at all????

The old lady looks like she's wearing a late thirties dress...but the uniform looks earlier.

My first thought was "Canadian" but then I thought French...but then...the tunic looks British...

What has he got on around his middle???

The joddies look a little too voluminous for British...

Another think...some sort of paramilitary boys drum and bugle band?

And then he appears to be wearing a Glengarry on his head!

I don't think its a Glengarry on his head because it comes to one peak.  The Glengarrys I have seen are similar in the all around shape but they have 2 peaks with a flat space in between. I know this makes no sense without a picture.

However, I think I have an idea of the period. Quite by accident I found this on Ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-WWI-US-ARMY-MILITARY-UNIFORM-TUNIC-HELMET-PHOTO_W0QQitemZ260201100771QQihZ016QQcategoryZ13971QQcmdZViewItem
Its a US WWI uniform that is for sale. If you scroll through the pictures you will see a man wearing the uniform that looks very similar like the boy in the picture.

The reason I called it a Glengarry is that either there is a ribbon or two at the rear, or....He's in need of a damn good haircut!!! :o :o

Also No woman of that lady's age would be seen in public with such a short dress in the WW1 era!!! I hve never seen such a collar detail on a dress of that period either. :D It was usually high neck stuff...

Good thoughts about the Doughboy kit, but....the pocket flaps are the wrong shape, and the material is much paler than the olive green of one of Pershings chaps....I don't think I can see bottom tunic pockets either.

Late Victorian Glengarrys were worn by all Regts in the British army not just the Scots Regts...This could be a colonial hang over...they were normally black though....

I am still not convinced that this is an army uniform per se either...but await    everybodys thoughts on the matter!

I'm certainly no expert but what about Turkey or Greece around WW1? Even now their "traditional" dress has ribbons out of the back of a cap and from what I've heard and read, the Turks weren't as well uniformed as the Allies in 1915.
