Kays of Hothersall, Ribchester, and area - photos to share
« on: Wednesday 05 January 05 11:47 GMT (UK) »
I am researching my great-grandfather's family, originally from Hothersall, a farm called Carr Wood or Barr Wood House. Thomas, (born Ramsgreaves 1822) and Mary Sharples (born Dilworth 1819) had 8 children, Rodger (born Dilworth, 1847), Ruth (Hothersall 1849), Philis (Alston,1850), Robert (1852), Martha (1855), Jabez (1856), Eli (1859) and Samuel. (1861). Jabez was my great-grandfather, and I know that Eli and Samuel became Insurance agents, married, and moved to Manchester (1901 census), and in 1901 Rodger and family are living in Dutton. Philis is still unmarried and living at home in 1881, but I can't locate Ruth, Philis or Martha's marriages. Kay is, unfortunately, a common name in Lancashire and in the Ribchester/Longridge area, and I am living in South Wales and have limited time to travel to the area and investigate. However, although I'm sure I will eventually find the earlier Kays, I would like to make contact with descendents of Jabez's brothers and sisters
One of the reasons I would like to find them is that we have numerous unidentified and very interesting family photos, and for some reason I have become determined to put names to them - the handsome people in our collection I'm convinced are all Kays! We even have some cine film of Jabez taken in the early 1930s, and I would be very happy to share all the photos with relatives, if I can find them.

Hi, I don't have any specific information at the moment relating to your family, other than I have a direct ancestor, John Johnson, who lived with his family in Dilworth (now part of Longridge as you probably already know) in 1871 - actual address in Mersey Street. So if you come across the name in your investigations please give me a shout.

The mention of handsome people fits my immediate family though, self naturally included, well, nots let be bashful eh???
Furthest Ive got back is to Paternal G,Parents, wed at St Peters Church St;Liverpool. To Mary Dunn.Which leads to an Irish connection, not to make things easy, cos',Pembrokeshire  comes into it!!
One thing I was told early on,dont get involved with this surname,Iwonder why??

I believe that William Kaye (1663 - 1718 Ribchester) is my 7th great grandfather on my mother's side.

The line I have is:

John Kay (1689 Hothersall - 1746) Son of William Kaye & Grace Blackburn
William Kay (1721 Hothersall - 1801) Son of John Kay & Martha Maudsley
Martha Kay (1754 Hothersall - 1838) Daughter of William Kay & Elizabeth Hesmondhalgh
Martha Mercer (1803 Clitheroe - 1868) Daughter of Martha Kay & James Mercer etc. etc.

I have gleaned some information off the Ancestry site but there are lots of gaps and some of the information other members have is just plain wrong (e.g. some have William getting married 20 years before he was born!).   ???

If you have any information about any of these people I would be very grateful for it.
Harrison, Jolly, Billington, Marsh & Rawsthorne from Preston & the Fylde area of Lancashire, and Mudd, Sheldon, Heseltine, Marsden, Moore, Thwaite & Storey from Wensleydale & North Yorkshire

He's my 7x great grandfather too!

I'm descended from Martha Kay's next brother in age, Ellis, born 1752, through his son, Elias, born 1792, his son Thomas, born 1821, to my great grandfather Jabez, born 1856, who was my mother's mother's father.

I think you have all the the right people there, both from the Ribchester parish records, but more particularly from the wills of both Wlliams and John in the Lancashire County Record Office (Martha's brother, John's will is there too).
The first William's will has an inventory, which is almost too good to be true.

I didn't realise there were people on Ancestry researching this family, I've felt rather alone with this for many years!
