John Shard or Sherd....Birth Help Please!!!!!!!!
« on: Friday 18 January 08 21:08 GMT (UK) »
 ???

I have a John Shard born about 1776.....not exactly sure where.....but NOT Lancashire.....

He married a Mary Dawson in 1801 in Prestwich....but his surname was spelt as Sherd.....could have been a mis spell.......could have been right ....that we'll never know...

If anyone is able to find a birth probably in the Cheshire area.....I would be most grateful.....
I have been looking for ages now with no luck....I have checked the IGI but none seem to fit...
I'm looking to see if we can find his parents names...

Thanks for Looking

Sherd seems a likely name in the area in which you are looking.  It is a variant of the name Shirt and is found clustered around North Derbyshire.

In case it is of interest:

In the 14th century William Sherd of Dysterlegh took part in the battle of Poitier, ten years after Crecy, with Edward III.  The Sherds came from Sherd a hamlet in the Macclesfield Forest not far from Dysterlegh. John de Sherd married Joan Dysterlegh in about 1335 and their pedigree  through to the middle of the17th century was proven in the Dugdale Visitation of 1663/4.  The name Sherd goes through many variations such as Shird, Shearle, Short and Shirt before becoming established as Shirt in modern times

Hi David

Thanks for that interesting information......I love finding all this extra stuff out...

The odd thing is John was married as Sherd.....his first son was born and baptised as Sherd....but then the name changes to Shard.....for most of the census's....except for a few where it's down as Shand....Sharp and the best one to date is Shed.....

It ended up being spelt as Shard....this is my mums maiden name...

Thanks Again for yoyr time and info
