George Brown and Jemima Crookston
« on: Sunday 20 January 08 02:14 GMT (UK) »
Dear All
I'm looking for information on George Brown born Liberton 1819. Unfortunately I have no parents names, so this tends to hamper research a little. George married Jemima Crookston in Scotland as they came to Australia as Mr and Mrs Brown I obtained this information from their obituaries. Jemima had been born at Lasswade 1818.
George and Jemima came to Australia on board the Admiral Boxer in 1857.
They landed at Geelong Victoria. Eventually they ended up in East Ballarat. George became a Railway Inspector and died in 1899. Jemima died in 1894.  Any details or suggestions of where I might locate information  regarding George and Jemima in Scotland would be most appreciated.
Regards
Wren

Dear Pam
Thanks so much. I really appreciate your generosity. This appears to be the right family. The names of the children appear to fit. Missing 1841 census records is the story of my life. I guess you can't win them all.
Once again thanks for your efforts.
Regards
Wren.

Hi Pam
Thanks. Following your find I spent some time trawling through the igi and found the births of their children which is really great. I'm still searching for the marriage date of George and Jemima. I'll just keep fossicking. Its amazing what I find wandering around in the dark
Thank you again
Wren

Hello wren,

I see that you've been on the IGI - I see 4 entries for 1840/41 for a George Brown and Jemima Crookston in Lasswade.  3 'submitted' and 1 'extracted.  I'd obviously tend to go with the 'extracted one.

Off to check SP just now   :O)  (my deed for the day)

Back off www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk  - from 1835 to 1845 only one marriage on the OPR for George Brown and a Jemima Crookstone (note the 'e') - in Lasswade in 1841.
I wouldn't worry about the 'e' as this I'm sure is your one.  I've seen a variety of ways of spelling that surname.

Date of the 1841 census was:  6 June - so their marriage was probably after that.

Just back off the IGI, using the 'search' facility and entering parents names, I see that there were a total of 30 entries for children - mixture of submitted and extracted - I take it this is the search you referred to earlier   :O)

Good luck with your searching.  Regards,   Steve :O)
