Otways of Sussex
« on: Sunday 20 January 08 16:51 GMT (UK) »
My paternal grandfather George Otway was married twice. His first wife Phyllis (Phillis) Eager died of TB in 1911. They had two sons Thomas bn 1889 and George bn 1890. George married Emma Smart and they had children George, Albert, Florence, Ronald, Geoffrey and Rodney. I believe they moved to London.

My grandfather then married Kate Amelia Norman who was born in Lingfield Surrey. They had 7 chidlren together Bernard, Frank, Kathleen, Ralph, Rose, May and Charles.

George Otway was bn 1867 and was a hairdresser in Richmond Buildings Brighton. Richmond Buildings and other streets around Albion Hill/Carlton Hill were demolished years ago.

George had brothers and sisters Frances who married George Atkins and moved to Arundel where they had children.
Frederick who was also a hairdresser married Mary Briggs they had children Frederick, George and Emily
Henry who married twice and moved to Canada with the salvation Army taking all his family
Caroline a nurse who never married
Alice a dressmaker who never married

If any of this rings a bell or two I would love to hear from you.

Me again

There are several early photos of Richmond Buildings on the "My Brighton and Hove" website that you might like to look at.  I remember one circa 1910 showing a hairdressers shop at the corner of Richmond Hill, but could not find that this time.  Perhaps it was the wrong hairdressers anyway.

However, as your quest seems to be to find living relatives, I also suggest you look into the following webste
