identify scottish regiment - please
« on: Monday 21 January 08 16:51 GMT (UK) »
I have a number of photos of my uncles who served WW1 and WW2. I need to identify which is which and hope to do so by uniform elimination. Can anyone tell me which regiment this chap is from?

I should have said - I have named him 'uncle willie' but we now think it is not him. He was in the Argylls in WW2. His brothers were in other regiments - Gordon Highlanders, I think and maybe Black Watch. Other family men were in the Cameron Highlanders during WW1 - this could also be one of them, I suppose.
All help appreciated.

You may have to think again!

The large double collar dog would indicate A&SH!!!

But we do need to seek out the resident expert on these things: Atom12 where ever she is!!!

Hi  :)

The soldier in your photo is a Gordon Highlander.  The dicing on the cap badge is wrong to be an Argyll & Sutherland Highlander, also he is wearing the distinctive 'Gordon' sporran.

Also agree that the photo was taken sometime after 1920 and possibly into the '30s.

Brilliant! Thank you! If he was a A&SH it would have been uncle Willie- 86yrs and still going strong but too far away to refer to! But it seems we've gotten it wrong. I thought the sporran, the cap and possibly even the belt might provide the answer. So - its uncle Jim the Gordon Highlander - 1st Batn. I shall rename him! He served in Europe in WW2, was a german prisoner of war, was released at the end of the war but died before returning home.
Many thanks for this
Jen

It's good to know that you've sorted out your soldier Jen.

The 1st Battalion The Gordon Highlanders were in the 153rd Brigade part of the famous 51st Hghland Division.  The Division's actions at St Valery contributed substantially to the evacuation of the British army at Dunkirk - if that is where he was taken prisoner.   :'(

Thank you both for your help.

Thanks too, Anne, for your info re the 1st batn. movements during WW2. I had just started to look into this but hadn't found anything about this specific Batn. Can I ask where you got your info? I'd like to find out more about his possible theatres of war. Wish I could get hold of his war records!
