You know what I think Jen, don't you!!  ???   ...  :P

It looks like the same man to me - aged in between the first and second photo you posted. He is a Gordon, and he bears a strong resemblance to the first photo in particular. Notice the left eyebrow (right as you look on) are the same in both photos, also with a similar smile on both photos.

IMHO, the photo taken of the soldier who is convalescing appears to show the same chap (or a close relative) who has obviously matured and still he has a  similar kindly smile.

The jacket  in the first photo and in this latest one, was worn up until at least the outbreak of WW2.  Also visible in this photo is the loop in his garter flash -besides all the other hints - which identifies him as a Gordon.

Here's a link to the Gordon's history.

Hi Anne

I had a feeling you were going to say this is uncle Jim again! I too felt that the first photo and this might be the same man. The jury is still out on the other one ( man in trousers).

I agree they all have a strong resemblence but there were, and still are, very strong family features especially around the hair and the eyebrows. For example, mr. trouserman has a hairline exactly like my grandfather and a chin too come to that!

It would be a real shame if all three are of the same soldier as it means we have no photos of the other brothers. However I suppose my mother might have been keener to hold onto grans photo's of a dead loved one than those who were still alive.

I always thought gran said they were 'my boys' though.

Anyway - thank you both for your support through this - it has been appreciated and most interesting.
Jen

Hi Jen

What a pickle eh!  :(  but the 'trousered' man's glengarry does look like a Gordon.  If they were Cameron or Black Watch glengarries they would just look dark in the photo with no dicing on it.  The convalescing guy appears to be a regular soldier who kept his glengarry, as, generally speaking those serving in WW2 wore Tam o'Shanters.

What about trying your local library to see if they have any newspaper photos.

Hi Jen  :)

Just another thought.  Are you sure you don't have anymore photos!! or even letters or a discharge book.

I was looking forward to seeing a photo of your Cameron and Black Watch soldiers.  I hope something turns up.

Oh dear! Now I am even more confused!

You say 'those serving in WW2 wore tam o shanters'. Are we saying these photos might be of men in WW1?
But I know uncle willie wore a glengarry - I've seen it and I'm pretty sure it had dicing around it (A&SH - WW2).

Also can you please explain what you mean when you say - 'a regular soldier who kept his glengarry'?

Please bear with me as I try to assimilate the info you are giving me and marry it with what has been passed on to me!

I am determined to unpick these gallant lads stories. Newspaper stories would be difficult as I don't live in Scotland and as yet no further photos, letters etc. I live in hope of something new turning up.

Hi Jen

Sorry for confusing you, but I'm not saying that these are WW1 photos.  The photos of the men in kilts appear to be 'between the wars', when glengarries would still be worn.

However, by the onset of WW2, Tam o' Shanters were worn for field dress. Also kilts, though worn by the BEF in 1939,  these eventually were no longer worn in the field.   Thus, the dress became more 'uniform', so that the only thing that would differentiate  a Scottish soldier from an English soldier in the field, would be the Tam o' Shanter.

As new recruits to WW2 would be issued Tam o' Shanters, I felt that as your soldier  (convalescing) had his glengarry, he could possibly already be a regular soldier with some years service - rather than a conscript.
