Presumably you know a bit more about them than you've let on - children, birthplaces etc? I would start with the IGI on www.familysearch.org. There's a marriage in Elstow that looks favourite as they appear to have been living there in 1851 with Joseph age 52? born Elstow and Elizabeth 48 b Huntingdon.

You could get into the IGI using the Hugh Wallis site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountryEngland.htm#PageTitle#- that way you go straight into the Elstow entries

David

In 1861 Joseph was 63 b Elstow and Elizabeth 59 b Abbotsley Hunts

hello, Mrsban,

The first place to go is the IGI, FamilySearch.org.

marriage
Joseph Negus  = Elizabeth Stratten
29th Mar. 1822  Elstow, Bedfordshire

baptised the following children at Elstow

Hannah     1st June 1823
Mary      15th may  1825
Susan    17th Apr. 1829
William   8th May  1831
John    2nd June 1833
Charles  5th July  1835
Josiah   6th Oct  1839
Lucy  3rd  Apr. 1842

Lucy has an birth entry in the BMDs
Mar ¼  1842  Bedford  6  31

This birth cert will confirm both parent's names.

I have this family in the 1841 & '51 censuses, do you have this info, if not I can send transcriptions.

The 1851 census shows Elizabeth was born in Huntingdon, Joseph in Elstow beds.

I've got the Abbotsley parish register transcript - there's a baptism that fits the 1861 census, of Elizabeth Stratton on 4 Apr 1802, daughter of William and Judith

There are burials of William Stratton age 59 on 22 Feb 1829 "of dropsy"and Judith age 77 on 14 March 1847 "of Gt Staughton Beds" (except Gt Staughton is in Hunts!)

But there's no marriage of William Stratton to a Judith on Hunts Marriage Index, and I can't see the marriage on the IGI.

There's no Joseph Negus baptised in Elstow, and no Joseph anything that could possibly have been mistaken for Negus.

However there are four baptisms of children of James and Lucy Negus in Elstow 1792-96 - and these are the only Negus baptisms before 1812. It looks as though Joseph ought to belong to this couple but proving it is another matter!

MrsBen

Jos Negus of Elstow is listed as spending a bit of time in Bedford Gaol [aged 19 in 1822] so there will be a description of him online at the Bedford Gaol site which is a bit of a bonus

You'll find a lot of Negus people were dissenters in the late 1600s up to the late 1700s. If you can get hold of a book called "The Minutes of the First Independent Church, (now Bunyan Meeting) at Bedford 1656-1766 ed H G Tebbitt pub Bedfordshire Historical Record Society 1976, (I got one off Abebooks) it may answer some of your mystery non-appearances.

Good luck

But you have to be a bit careful. There are two families of Woodhams. One starts at Knotting/Pertenhall then Riseley, Keysoe, Southill, thence to Gamlingay, Arrington, (Cambs) Debden/Widdington, (Essex) and becomes Nash-Woodham in Shepreth.

The other (so far as far as I can make out unconnected) family is in Sharnbrook.

Plus Harrold, Melchbourne, Milton Ernest, Stow Longa etc.

All good fun.
