Syston Street. Leicester.
« on: Saturday 26 January 08 00:07 GMT (UK) »
Just wondering if someone could help with some information.

Some of my ancestors I`ve recently found on the 1881 Census lived at 251 Syston Street ( Seg Mem Bk ).

Firstly, What does Seg Mem Bk stand for or mean?

Secondly, Is 251 Syston Street still standing today?

Many thanks Steve

Well I thik it READS (See Mem Bk)

I think it's a notation, not part of the address.

Greeting's & Welcome again ......Steve

251. Syston Street - Corner of Syston Street & Curzon Street.
Next door to the Elementary School
1916 Trade Directory = Newsagents Shop
Wm Tom Goodrich.

To day = That part is a small Industrial Estate
Doubt if the shop is still standing ....sadley

Re:~ See  Mem Bk ...?
Just wonder if this refers to an amendment Book of the Enumerator?
I see that according to the Trade Directory for 1881
I has Henry Wells as Shop keeper
But on the Census return it states his occupation as Shoe Riveter
&  his wife as the Shop worker .... ?

I have been looking for old photo's of Syston st. Will let you know if I can get one.

Hi Zena,

Thanks for your reply and the information enclosed. Hope its not too cheeky to ask :-[ but should you ever find a photo of Syston Street, would love a copy if possible please. :)

I live in Norfolk and although I visited Leicester with my parents on many occasions I can not remember the scenery or landscape as I was very young at the time.

Best wishes Steve

Just wondering if anyone could point me to a map website that could allow me to see the layout of this area :)

Ideally what I would like to do is print out a street map of the area so I could place my ancestors in their locations.

I have checked various auction sites, they have ordnance survey maps for the 1900`s but no street maps are listed.

Any suggestions most welcome. :) :)
