Daniel Sullivan a Shoemaker from Bantry
« on: Saturday 02 February 08 15:06 GMT (UK) »
Looking to trace back on this man who is my GGGgrandfather. Info I have is:  In 1881 he was listed as being a Car Driver living in Parade Field, Bantry at the time of his marriage (per the Marriage Cert for his son Daniel), by 1901 he was a shoemaker who owned a Shop at 12 Main St, Bantry that he operated alongside his sons and his wife and daughters, who were all dressmakers (per 1901 Census). His wife – Mary- was an Irish speaker from Co Kerry.
Known Children:
·   Richard (1 Aug 1876)
·   Daniel (27 Jul 1878 – bef 1885),
·   Mary (16 Dec 1879)
·   Norah (5 Jul 1881 – c.1957),
·   Denis (b.1882),
·   Elizabeth (1883)
·   Nellie (b. 5 Jul 1884),
·   Daniel (1885)
·   John (1889).

Any info would be great.

Hello RoryT,

I've linked your Honora (Norah) Sullivan, Bantry thread to this one.

Further to my first posting on this. Would anyone know what a car driver was and if there would be any way of tracing Daniel through this avenue of research?

A Car Driver operated a Horse Drawn carriage (or Car) - possibly a Cab

Sometimes these were owned by the Driver.

It may have been a jaunting car or a long car.

Just trying to keep this posting alive, Honora went on to marry Patrick Foley (1881 - 1916) in 1903 in Bantry, he was the son of a herdsman.  The name Daniel and Dennis seem to feature prominently in the family.  Would this tweek any links with any of you Rootschatters!!!!!

I know that looking for the right Sullivans in Cork (and especially in Bantry) is like looking for the proverbial needle in a haystack, but I'll keep on trying.

Did I read somewhere that the 1911 census for Cork was coming on-line soon.  This might shed some light on my search.

I found them on the 1911 Census, same info as on my first posting. Does anyone know where the rest of the children might have married off to.  It would seem that, after the father died, one of the sons would have taken over the shop and continued the business.  Would anyone in Bantry know anything on this.
