Francis BECK born 1853-1856 Jersey
« on: Thursday 07 February 08 20:24 GMT (UK) »
Trying to obtain more info about Francis Beck. English 1901 census shows place of birth as St. Helier approx 1856. He was married in Plymouth in 1881 aged 25 - his father was also called Francis Beck and was a butter merchant. Death cert from 1928 shows age as 75. A distant relative said he was banished from Jersey.

Thanks in advance.

1891 has a Frank Beck married aged 37 b Jersey working as an able seaman onboard the Boman Prince which was moored in Monmouth Wales

There is nothing on the CI 1841 - 1871 for any Francis Beck  - if he was forced to leave Jersey - could he have either changed his surname or "adapted" it

Hi Carole,

Many thanks for checking. I think you're right about the adapted name.

"Francis" was a merchant seaman in Sept 1881 and was not in the family home for 1891 census. I had assumed he was at sea, but looks like you found him for me.

Hi Rob -

If I was to take a guess at the Jersey version of a name which was anglicised as 'Beck', the first name to come to mind is Bequet  (pronounced 'Beckay').

There is an interesting Francis Bequet on the 1871 census

Hi

The 1871 image is actually spelt Beoquet or Besquet and transcribed as Beoquet on Ancestry

Francis snr was a farmer and landowner which is a different occupation to butter merchant but if Francis jnr was banished from Jersey, who knows?

His age is 25 in 1881 giving a birthyear of 1856 but when he died in 1928 he was 75 so birthyear 1853

I'll have a look at earlier censuses for this family

Hi

The 1861 has them indexed as Bugent but the image appears to be Buquet.  Francis jnr is 10 months old.  Francis snr is shown as a "landed proprietor"

They are living with the parents of Francis snr - also a Francis and also a "landed proprietor"

I suppose he could have added 5 years or so on his age when he married

Hi

I searched the birth indexes from 1852 to 1858 and there was only one Beck born in that period and unless he changed sex, it's not him!
