My thanks to all who have spent time on this during the past week, and for adding your findings. I hadn't really considered the name variation. As a result, I've just found some Becquet births in Plymouth from 1901 which I can investigate on my next trip to the records office.

I know this thread is several years old, but I am also researching the elusive Francis beck, I'm his great great gran daughter and was just curious about robs connection, my grandad was the youngest son of Francis beck s son Francis beck 😢
