Charles Edward Yate is in the 1851 Census, aged 1, the son of Charles Yate, Vicar of Holme upon Spalding Moor (aged 46) and his wife Jane A (aged 24). Charles (jnr) was born in Holme, which is in Yorkshire.

That is the only record of him in the census.

He is in the 1914 Army List as a Brevet Colonel on the Indian Army Staff. His substantive rank of Lt Colonel is effective 9 November 1893. He is not a ‘sir’, just CSI, CMG, so he must have received the GCSI to gain the title ‘Sir’ later. He is not in the September 1918 Army List.

In the 1883 Army List, it says that his home regiment is the 49th Foot (Berkshire Regiment). He is attached to the Bombay Staff Corps as a Political Assistant, Third Class, at Rajpootana, with the rank of Captain. He became an officer in November 1867.

In the 1884 List he is now a 2nd Class Political Assistant, and is Boundary Settlement Officer in Bhoppaul.

In 1890 he is a Major (from November 1887), and has both the CSI and CMG by then.

In 1894, he has at last got around to telling the publishers his war service. “Major CE Yate served in the Afghan War in 1880 as Political Officer at Khelat-I-Ghilize, accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in the march to Candahar, and was present at battle of Candahar (Medal with Clasp, and Bronze Decoration).”

So medal no 5 is the Afghanistan medal with clasp for Kandahar. Neil confirmed that medal no 7 is the Delhi Durbar medal. That was when King Edward VII visited India, and all the Indian princes paid homage.

So that leaves medal 3, medal 4 and the neck and breast badge. I thought the last ones might be for the GCSI when he could call himself ‘Sir’, but he is plain Colonel in the 1914 Army List.

Charles Edward Yate married either Charlotte Heath Burnley or Anna Elizabeth Luscombe in Kensington in Mar (qtr) of 1899.

UPDATE

The neck and breast badges are of the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem. In LG of 22 June 1926 he is promoted to the Knights of Justice from the Knights of Grace.

In the General Election of December 1918 he is elected to serve as the MP for Melton, Leicestershire. Again plain Col. Charles Edward Yate.

He is re-elected in November 1922.He is now Colonel Sir Charles Edward Yate, Bart. He is re-elected in December 1923.

He was elected as an MP in December 1910. Which was probably the reason he had the photograph taken.

Neil

So he married Charlotte!

I didn't see your LG entires otherwise I would not have bothered. The entry you mark ??? is the notice for him being elected MP. You have to go back a few pages to see the start of the notice.

Still got Medals 3 and 4 to do.

I wonder if there were any "male hiers of his body lawfully begotten"

Hi Ken,
Yes I must have been updating my previous post as you posted all your info from Army Lists, census and others which I didn't have.

I think he certainly did have heirs.

Well done Annie. The dates of birth/death matches those found by Neil.

How times have changed he obviously sat for a photograph each time he stood for parliament.

I am amazed at everything you have all found out, and how quickly too.

And I am glad that my little remark helped.  ;D
