John Stewart Selkirk or Selkirkshire c1740
« on: Monday 11 February 08 21:29 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am after further info on my gggggggrandfather John Stewart born in Selkirkshire in 1735-1740 please?

His place of origin is given in his childrens baptism records.

John Stewart married Patience Brown in 1798 in County Durham England, and the baptisms records of his children born in 1798, 1800 and 1803 say that he was originally a native of Selkirk, Scotland but dont know if that meant Selkirk itself or Selkirkshire. He died aged 80 in 1815 so born c1735 meaning that he was probably married nefore his 1789 wedding. He was a skinner by trade and a tanner by his death.

Thanks

Ben

Hi Ben,

I did a quick search on SP and there appears to be only one John Stewart registered as having been born / baptised from 1730 to 1740

John Stewart 19/2/1733 to William Stewart in the Parish of Yarrow, Selkirk
No mothers name given

GROS reference 799/000 010 0064

Dave

Hi Dave

Thanks for that as that could very well be a match as my John had a son William who could have been named after his grandfather. The age is very similar as well

In yarrow Kirkyard there is a James Stewart who died at old Lewinshope Yarrow on 13-4-1855 aged 83 (Born 1772)
On the headstone there are Fletchers,Bapties Shortredes and Scotts.

Having died in 1855 you may actually get his deach cert on SP as they start 1855

Hi there John Stewart was my 5th great grandfather. I believe they moved to Bishop Auckland in Durham and they were coal miners.

Hi

My John Stewart was born in 1738 in Selkirk and died in 1815 in Durham. He wed in 1789 to Patience Brown. His childrens 1798, 1800 and 1803 baptisms say John was a native of Selkirk. When he wed in 1789 he was a widower. I think he had a son by his previous wife born in 1777 called James who I think died as a baby.

I want to identify his first wifes name and when they married as the baptism just lists the fathers name. It was the same parish he wed Patience at in 1789 and had children at. I think their first son was listed as the 2nd or 3rd son of John Stewart so he must have had a few kids by his first wife.

If he was born in 1738 he must have wed about 1760ish.

Hi there, my John Stewart also married Patience Brown on the 27th April 1789 but I believe his mum and dad was a James Stewart and his mum was a Isabella Dickson. That is if I have it right but now at a loss as I can't find no more records.  Also could I please ask you if you have a Peter Stewart married to a Hannah Wild in your family tree as these are my great great grandparents.
Thankyou.

Hi

I also have his parents listed as James and Isabella. Where did you get your info from about this?

John was a skinner. There was a few marriages in the Durham area 1760-1780. Its whether he wed his first wife in Scotland or Durham.
