Carole, thanks for both responses. I posted exactly all I was given but will now get back to the originator. What next I don't know yet.

Thanks very much.

Hi

I am currently assisting a friend with his family tree & his grandfather was this George Allan. Interested to know whether you found any additional information as I have also hit a bit of a brick wall with this, wife & children moved to Canada.

Per www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. George and Isabella married in 1897 Stromness

What year did Isabella emigrate to Canada?

If after 1911 - Were they still together on the 1911 census?

Have you looked for a death for George on Scotlands People?

From here http://forum.caithness.org/archive/index.php/t-8654.html, the family seem to be (from 1911 census?):

George Allan living at the Lock #19 with wife Isa Heddle children: Ida, Willie, Annie, Barbara, Stuart.

Further post:

The family in #19 are my family members.
William, son of George Allan & Isabella ( Heddle ) was my father.
His brother Stuart ( age 16 ) was drowned in 1918 when the Shamrock, a motor boat , went down as well as John Mowat ( age 35 ) and David Banks ( age 60 ). He also had 3 sisters, Barbara, Ida, and Annie.
Isabella is buried in an unmarked grave here in Calgary Alberta Canada.
She is listed while George does not seem to be.

If correct, famiy still in Scotland when son Stuart died in 1918? You could check the 1918 death cert for Stuart to confirm details and check whether father George was still alive.

I think the death shows on Scotlands People as follows:

STEWART NICOLSON Allan, 17, died in 1918 at Canisbay

George's wife Isabella was showing as widow when she arrived with children on the 24 June 1921 in Canada to join her mother and brothers.

The 1918 dead of son Stewart will show whether father George was still alive or deceased by that date.

Many thanks for your replies Carol & Monica.

If George & his family are in the 1911 Census, then as you suggested the next logical step is to get Stewart Nicolson Allan's death certificate. Unfortunately on Scotlands People this morning when I purchased the record it is the incorrect image, so I will have to wait for them to get back to me. Will let you know what the outcome is.
