1891 look-up HAWDON
« on: Tuesday 12 February 08 14:03 GMT (UK) »
I would be grateful if SKS could help me solve this little conundrum...

I have found this GRO marriage at FreeBMD

GRO Marriages SEP Qtr 1885
HAWDON Charles Henry
ALCOCK Fanny Ellen
Caistor 7a  974

and this looks like the family in the 1901 census index, assuming "Ellen" is Fanny Ellen...

1901 census index
census place: Gt Grimsby
Charles H Hawdon 48  Watchmaker Shop Keeper Lincs Grimsby
Ellen Hawdon 40   Lincs Cleethorpes
Sidney Hawdon 11 Lincs Grimsby
Alexander Hawdon 7 Lincs Grimsby

However, I think Fanny Ellen was born in Sheffield. Here she is in 1881 living with an uncle and aunt:

1881 census
PRO Ref RG11    Piece 3272    Folio 73
92 Cleethorpe Road
Clee With Weelsby, LIN

Charles ALCOCK Head Marr 53 Fish Salesman Burton Joyce, NTT
Mary A. ALCOCK Wife Marr 56 Fish Salesman Wife Bolham, NTT
Fanny ALCOCK Niece Unm 20  Sheffield YKS

so... would SKS be able to find the HAWDON family in the 1891 census to see whether it lists Cleethorpes or Sheffield as her birthplace.

I have considered the possibility that Fanny might have died and Charles remarried to an Ellen, but I can't find those events in the GRO. (and Ellen is the right age to be Fanny Ellen).

Thanks in advance :)

Thanks Tati,

One reason why the HAWDON marriage looked so right was that Fanny's father was a watchmaker like Charles HAWDON  :D

(In contrast, her grandfather was transported to Australia)
