benson 1881
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 02:47 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone.

I am seeking information about a Joseph Benson, in particular where he was born.
I thought the 1881 census might help.
When married in Glasgow in 1882, he was listed as being 26, occupation sawyer.

There doesn't appear to be a Joseph Benson in 1881 census of that age, nearest I saw was a Joseph Bennison,  age 28, born Ireland, general lab.
living in Govan.  Nor can I see a Joseph that fits in 1891 census.
What was his wife's name?

correct
Margaret was born in 1857, in Glasgow.

Capricorn,
By 1891 Joseph & Margaret & young family were in Brisbane (Australia).

Hi Brolga

A few more questions to see whether we can find Scottish origins for Joseph  ;)  From his 1882 marriage cert:

- what were the names of his parents
- did they show as alive or deceased
- what was the occupation of his father
- the names of the witnesses

Regards.

Monica  :)

Sorry everyone for the delay.
I have just obtained a copy of the certificate from my sister who has the original.

Joseph Benson's parents George & Mary (née hair).
Mary shown as deceased; George listed as farmer.
He lived at time of marriage (2 Jan 1882) at 33 Crawford St Glasgow.
Witnesses were John Maxwell & Esther Maxwell, presumably elder brother & either Mother or younger sister of Margaret.

Looks like he was Irish, not English.
