James Brodie
« on: Thursday 14 February 08 09:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am searching for information on my ggg grandfather James Brodie b c1842 and died December 1875. From census returns in West Lothian where he was living he lists his birth place as the Orkney Isles.

From his death certificate his parents are listed as John Brodie and Ann Brodie ms Brown. From the IGI I have found a marriage between John Brodie and Ann Brown on 21 Nov 1833 in Stronsay but i cannot find James' birth on IGI or SP.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks

Sorry, Tracey, but the only birth I can find is a submitted one for Margaret Miller Brodie, born 1853. :( I suspect you will have found the same. However, I think this is James' parents in 1861:

Address: Airy, Stronsay, Orkney
John Brodie, m, head, 52, ag lab, Stronsay, Orkney
Ann ", f, wife, 43, -, Stronsay, Orkney
David ", m, son, 12, scholar, Stronsay, Orkney
Margaret ", f, dau., 8, scholar, Stronsay, Orkney

And in 1851:

Address: Airy, Stronsay, Orkney
John Brody, m, head, 41, agr labourer, Stronsay, Orkney
Ann Brown, f, wife, 36, -, Stronsay, Orkney
Ann Brody, m, dau., 11, -, Stronsay, Orkney
James ", m, son, 8, -, Stronsay, Orkney
Robert ", m, son, 5, -, Stronsay, Orkney
David ", m, son, 3, -, Stronsay, Orkney

And in 1841:

Address: Easthouse, Stronsay St Nicholas, Orkney
John Brodie, m, 30, ag lab & fisherman
Ann ", f, 25, -
Isabella ", f, 6, -
John ", m, 4, -
Ann ", f, 1, -

All born Orkney Islands

Thank you hume24

You've given me a lot more than I had and I'm very grateful. I have a few more bits of info to work with now which should hopefully take me back a little more.

At least the 1851 census shows James with his parents which is the first piece to tie him to them apart from his death cert.

Hi, you,ve probably got this info by now but I found this while researching my own relatives: at St Nicholas Cemetery, Stronsay erected by Ann Brown in memory of her husband John Brodie died 23/5/1876 aged 68yrs. There are a few other Brodies there
Dumfriesshire: Bell, Kerr, Dickson, Hetherington
Orkney: Cursiter, Peace, Drever, Cooper, Paterson, Brock, Leslie, Malcomson, Miller, Scott
Cumberland: Charlton, Young

Hello
John and Ann Brodie are in my family tree on my Gran's side and possibly also my grandfathers - I'm trying to make the connection between John and Ann and my grandfather who was called James Brodie and was born in Whitburn, West Lothian - when and how he came from Orkney - are we talking about the same people?

Hi Susan

James Brodie b 1873 in Whitburn was the son of James Brodie b 1842 Stronsay and Jane Wilson b 1831 Whitburn. James was the son of John Brodie and Ann Brown, both of Stronsay.

James (b1842) died 30/12/1875 in Whitburn and was working as a railway labourer at the time of time. His daughter Annie was my 3xggmother.

I have James SNR on 1861 census in Stronsay as an 18yr old unmarried ploughman at Holland Farm and by 1871 he is living at Halfway Houses, Whitburn as an agricultural labourer with his wife and 3 children - Christina 4, Ann 2 and John 6mths.

Hello and Thank you. I have notes I cant put my hands on at the moment and some information linking my grandmother to John and Ann Brodie. Her marriage certificate to James Brodie says that they were cousins and I think John and Ann are the grandparents these cousins would have had in common. I'll hunt out the dates as I am hopeless at remembering dates but I think we share some ancestors Tracey.
