The Irish Ancestors website has an article about Dublin which refers to the surnames in the city. It mentions a large number of surnames common in Dublin but goes on to say that few originated there as the city is a comparatively young one and a great many people from rural areas moved in to seek work. The most common names came from the areas immediately adjoining the county -

Byrne and O'Toole from Wicklow.
Dunne, Behan and Moore from Kildare.
Reilly, Lynch and Brady from Meath.

Genealogy.about.com has a two page article about the Surnames of Ireland. It also refers to the Byrne and Moore names. Byrne originated in Kildare and then moved to Wicklow prior to becoming a common Dublin name. Moore started life in Kildare but today the surname is most common in Counties Antrim and Dublin.
