Sharwood/Sherwood family in Brighton 1841-1871
« on: Sunday 09 January 05 01:08 GMT (UK) »
It is a while since I trawled through the 1841-1871 Censuses of Brighton at the FRC before they were put on CD's.  I am not at all sure now if they are indexed, but I would be most grateful if someone could have a look for the Sharwood/Sherwood family for me.  A John Sherwood,b.1782 and his wife Fanny b.1788 may have been living at 2, St.John's Place in 1841.  Their son William Sharwood/Sherwood,b.1811 was married to Harriet, and with their son George William, b. 1836, might have been at a different address in 1841.
Parents John and Fanny were dead by the 1851 Census, but maybe son  William was living with his wife and son George William at another address in  1851 also.
I do have an entry for the Sharwood/Sherwood family in 1861 at 19, Francis Street, but in 1871 they seem to have moved elsewhere.
And I do have the 1881 entry for William Sherwood, b.1811 at 4 Derby Place, fisherman, with his second wife Mary and two more sons.  George William Sherwood, b. 1856, (son of G.W.Sherwood, b.1836) has moved to Eastbourne in 1881 and started a large new generation of Sherwoods.
If anyone can untangle this jumble, I would be MOST grateful for any infilling of details of my Sherwood branch in Brighton 1841-1871.
Keith

Hi Kris and Jane,
I've had a bit of a lie-in today and couldn't believe how busy you have both been while I have been sleeping.  As you can see, the midnight oil had been burning late in the Sherwood household - so I have an excuse - but it seems I wasn't the last to bed yesterday (today, actually).
And that's a nice early help with the marriages too.  Thanks so much for Census details, and the "Wellington Arms" address puts an added dimension into my further research.
What a nice Sunday morning surprise!
Very best wishes,
Keith

Hi, Paula,
Have only just checked this thread again, and thank you so much for your kind offer.  The only thing I can offer regarding Sussex at the moment is the up-to-1837 marriage index if you need a look-up or three!

Hi, Paula,
I've only just looked on this thread today, so sorry about the delay in thanking you for taking the trouble to look this up for me.  Lots of lovely info - but can I ask whether there is an age given for George Sherwood at his address in the Albion Hill area.  I'm hoping that he'd just left home to start earning an independent living by 1851.
Very best wishes,
Keith
