Hi Deb & Monica
Thanks Monica  ;D  I'm hoping if I can collect enough Canadian data, you might be able to work your magic and find  them out in Scotland  ;D

I have just realised, Deb - that on the 1901 Canada Census, where Frank and Edith are newly married, living with his parents James & Lydia - that James states his birth as 14 Aug 1823, not 1826 as is stated on that website link of Lydia's family. He is also stated to have immigrated in 1832.  This would infer he immigrated as a child and therefore his parents and perhaps some siblings, did also - and either to Canada or to Michigan. This would also mean, his parents are possibly never going to be found on any Scots census.

Hi Ambly  :)

Thanks again ...for all your hard work.

The change in James' DOB is quite a find ...I wonder why no-one else has picked up on it.?  :-\  added  ....It still does not match with what Monica has found , although her info states that they are christenings and not the actual birthdate.
Would we be able to spot his parents in any of the censuses ?

These are the only two couples (father Donald and mother Margaret) showing on the OPRs as having children including a James in the OPRs between 1815-30 in Perthshire. Not a 100% method, it could be that James's OPR birth/christening doesn't show or his siblings show but not his.  As always, this part is frustrating.

To Donald McGREGOR and Margaret DUNN:

1. DUNCAN MCGREGOR  Christening: 23 FEB 1823 Comrie, Perth, Scotland
2. JAMES MCGREGOR Christening: 26 AUG 1824 Comrie, Perth, Scotland
3. GREGOR MCGREGOR Christening: 03 SEP 1826 Comrie, Perth, Scotland
4. PETER MCGREGOR Birth: 07 MAY 1829/  Christening: 25 MAY 1829 Comrie, Perth, Scotland

To Donald McGREGOR and Margaret MACFARLANE:

1. JAMES MACGREGOR  Birth: 19 DEC 1825/ Christening: 25 DEC 1825 Perth, Perth, Scotland
2. MARGARET MACGREGOR Birth: 19 MAR 1827/ Christening: 25 MAR 1827 Perth, Perth, Scotland
4. DONALD MACGREGOR  Birth: 27 DEC 1829/ Christening: 10 JAN 1830 Perth, Perth, Scotland
5. CHRISTIAN MACGREGOR  Birth: 23 MAR 1832/ Christening: 15 APR 1832 Perth, Perth, Scotland

Hi Monica

Thanks, once again, for taking the time.
It seems that the 2nd family did their christening shortly after the births of their children.

As far as the first family with Margaret Dunn ... His older brother, Duncan, was born 23 feb 1823 ,....which would only allow 7 months for 'our' James to be born ie: 14 Aug 1823.

James and Lydia's children's names also do not provide any clues with the exception of , Nellie Grant McGregor, Franklin's younder sister.

arrghhhhh  :-\  where do we go from here ?

Deb

To be honest, I'm not focusing so hard on the precise dates for James birth given how these can vary over the years. The Margaret Dunn family certainly is the closest so far (that date for Duncan is a christening date so not clear what his birth month would have been).

I don't know what the early censuses in Canada are like and when they start from. If James states he left Scotland c. 1832, the dream ticket is to find him with family in these early years.

I get frustrated at this stage because I haven't got access to these censuses and have to sit on my hands for this bit!

The 1851 Census for Canada East and Canada West (Ontario & Quebec), New Brunswick and Nova Scotia is availab.e

If you go to www.allcensusrecords.com you can see what earlier census are available, but they are hit and miss.

James McGREGOR age 77, a married Farmer, died 18 May 1904, of Lot 16, Concession 3
He was born Scotland. COD was Heart Disease. Religion: Presbyterian
(This record format has no provision for information regarding parents)
(This age at death brings his DOB back to ca1827)

Looks like James and Lydia are buried in - or at least mentioned on a headstone or burial record -of Fansher Cemetery
Names associated with the Fansher United cemetery Euphemia Township  Concession 4 lot 17
MCGREGOR  ,  Freddie  Roy
MCGREGOR  ,  Grace  (Tinney)
MCGREGOR  ,  James
MCGREGOR  ,  Louisa  Maud
MCGREGOR  ,  Lydia
MCGREGOR  ,  Margaret
MCGREGOR  ,  Wallace

It looks as if though, there are 2 Fansher Cemeteries in the area - and that the McGREGOR's above are associated with the Florence one:--

A headstone incscription may or may not further the search for James' background.
