"ROYAL DANE" to Australia in 1865
« on: Sunday 09 January 05 12:52 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone have the Full shipping list including the surgeon's report for the Royal Dane's journey from England to Australia in 1865?
The passengers whom I am looking for are William and Elizabeth LAWLOR who originally came from Limerick in Ireland with their two children Mary, 2 years and a baby, Margaret Eliza.
Can anyone help?

Thankyou for your time
Regards from sunny Queensland

Hi Christmack

If you haven't already seen it, this site has lots of information on your ship and the 1865 trip, but the only passenger list appears to be for the cabin passengers (about 12). The steerage folks don't score a mention.

http://www.halenet.com.au/~elardron/royal-dane.htm

I gather that the ship came into Queensland (Please correct me if I am wrong). I will check the name at the Archives next time I visit - which won't be until after the school holidays. My record for finding things at the archives is not very good - but I live in hope.

Hi Cm

There are a large number of references to your ship at the archives, but none of them seem to reference the main passenger list files for the given dates. There does appear to be a copy of the health report together with (I think) the results of an enquiry. Included in the index was the comment "32 people died on board due to doctors alleged drunkeness". Sounds like a fun trip.

There are a large number of references to the land order files, I would assume that many of the people on board were given grants.

I found no reference to your Lawlor family (I checked Lawler as well) which would reinforce the idea that there is no complete passenger list in the archives. (I could not be completely sure without checking every index reference).

If you would like more information on these records please let me know

Dear Trish
Thank you so much for getting this info. for me. Yes, it does sound like it was a great journey!!!
If it is possible, I would like a copy of both the health report and the results of an enquiry that you mentioned, if that is not too much trouble for you.
Just let me know if there is a charge.

Thank you again

Regards

Christmack

Jody,

Great to hear from you as this family does present a real mystery as far as their journey to Australia. I would love to have a copy of your family tree.
Because of Spam mail the moderator of this sight has suggested that I send you my e.mail address privately so I have resent this message, including my e.mail address, to you this way.

I have been trying for years to obtain the Shipping list for the Ship that William and Elizabeth LAWLOR came here on, but to no avail.

I do know that it was the ROYAL DANE and the year was 1865 as this was written on the back of a photocopy of a photograph.

There is a lot in the newspapers of the time about this ship's arrival but the ship's list is really evading me.
Apparently it was quarantined in Rockhampton for measles and later the passengers for Brisbane came to Brisbane on the LEICHHARDT.

As mentioned in a previous posting in Rootschat under Ireland-General they had a daughter Mary 2 years at the time and another Margaret Eliza only a few weeks old and she was said to have died during the journey. This is one of the reasons that I would like the ship's records as this death would have been mentioned.
I do know that this child was born to William and Elizabeth in the March of 1865 in Ireland and there does not appear to be any record of her after their arrival here in Australia. It would also be great to be able to get back further in Ireland but this is where I come that proverbial brick wall I am afraid !!!

I have just answered a message that I received from Kerry from the above section of Rootschat, coincidently the same time as your message came through the other entry I had under emigrants. You may wish to check out this page as well.

Looking forward to hearing back from you and also receiving your family tree.

Let me know if I can help you any further.

Take care,
Christine
