1st Royal Marine Battalion - 1916
« on: Monday 18 February 08 23:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,
A long shot I know, but just wondered if anyone might have a relative in this particular battalion - in 1916.
My husband's ancestor, John William Richards, was in this battalion, but sadly died (aged 29 years)on 13 th November, 1916 (Battle of the Somme). He is buried in the Ancre British Cemetery, Beaumont-Hamel.
I'm hoping that someone might have a group shot of the regiment/battalion as a starting point to identify him.
I only came across this information very recently - so any information regarding John, or his regiment, would be most gratefully received.
Thank you.
Paulene.

Have you seen this?

Its his RND (Royal Naval Division) Service record notes....Its on ancestry so you may have to subscribe to see it.

DD at the end of his service history is "Discharged Dead"

He was Inns of Court Officer training before joining the Royal Marines im sure the Inns Of Court are well documented and you may find a photo amongst their stuff.

Hi Annie and Ady,
Sorry it has taken me a while to reply. I've been reading Annie's report (so touching, and so sad. My husband will feel very proud. My research of his ancestors shows the Richards family to have been very committed, and hard working people - both in their own work, and for others. So, it is no surprise to read of the bravery of the regiment John joined). Thank you so much for sending it, Annie.
Ady, thank you, too. I have ancestry, and after reading that John Henry Richards had an only son who died in WW1 (John Henry's obituary) I found his information. Can you tell me what V.B. issued to father means?
Plus, how would I contact the Inns of Court? Is it direct, or is the information in the National Archives?
Very grateful to both of you.
Kind regards,
Paulene
P.S. Annie, felt for you the other week - glad you got the plumbing sorted!

Not sure on Inns Of Court but Google may throw stuff up....
VB is after ADM 171 which is the Naval Medal issues similar to MICs but not available online...at a guess i would think it was Victory  and British War Medals issued to his father.

The Great War Forum in the Ships and Navies section may be able to give you more info.
