Ringrose, do you have her married name?  With that I could look up a marriage which would reveal her maiden name,

Hi Jane
Now this is the problem because I am pretty sure her marriage to my gggrandfather William Frederick Clark in the early 1800s was her 2nd marriage and the name then was Bradford. So you see I have no idea what her maiden name was for sure. I did find an Elizabeth Gearing marrying a Bradford in 1891 but her ag e seemed wrong  when I looked at a Sussex census. She was a lot older than William.
Sorry to make things difficult.

Ringrose, I think we've got her.  I'm sure she was born Elizabeth Gearing.  The second marriage below is the ONLY BRADFORD male marriage to anyone called Elizabeth in Sussex! within the time-frame.

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 28 May 1806:
Subject: William CLARKE, bach
Spouse: Elizabeth BRADFORD, wid botp (B)

Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Place: Brighton, East Sussex,  Date: 20 May 1793:
Subject: Nicholas BRADFORD, widr
Spouse: Elizabeth GEARING, sp botp (B)

So NICE when things go right!
Jane

Hi Jane
It all fits into a pattern because william Clark later in life went into a mill partnership witha Gearing and his granddaughter married a Gearing in the mid 1800s . Keep it in the family so to speak.

Brilliant! :)
Do you know which mill?  I have some information on Sussex corn mills as I have millers in the family.  Let me know if I can look anything up for you,
Jane

Hi
William was a miller at  Windmill Hill In 1841. and Coxes Mill Dallington in 1851 having just gone into partnership with Gearing,The story is in a book about Dallington which as luck would have it I cannot lay my hands on at the moment but when I do I will verify dates and names etc.His eldest son George was killed at the mill in 1864 when his "frock" became entangled in the machinery . He died after 2 days of suffering according to the inquest. His other son Charles Frederick was at the mill too. In 1871 Charles was at Heath Mill Pulborough but returned to Brightling and in 1881 was living at the Mill Pond and worked at Darwell Mill.William died in 1876. Charles gave up milling and moved away from the area. Charles had married Jane Nightingale who died young and he remarried and had a further 9 children.  These 2 mills are only remnants now and I found them last year which was quite exciting.
All for now

Hi Ringrose,
Wouldn't you know it, my mills book is only for the HORSHAM area.
I have a feeling you already know about this site,  http://www.millsarchive.com/1about/ourcol.aspx
As I found a document concerning the accident you described, did you submit it?  If not, there's plenty there concerning your millers & their mills!

Hi Jane
yes I did send them the information. I first had an inkling of something unusual when the name Clark came up on the a2a website so having got the reference for the inquest document went to Lewes to get a copy. The accident had further co nsequences as my gggrandmother cut her throat soon after the accident --she had in previous months lost 2 daughters and Georges death  was the final straw. I also have this inquest.
