Hi Bryant,
Many, many thanks for your extensive search.
Shame she wasn't there but I least I know she wasn't in Colchester.

Iv'e spent some time on this one! so a little more doesn't matter

ELVINA...is that her real name?

when she married the records show her as ELVINA and then appears to be replaced with ELWINA (you can view that freely on the . section of freebmd...I think it was page 1327) 1860, June qtr, vol 2a, page 522, Medway...I know you have the cert, it's just what appears on the register!

In 1871 the census actually appears to indicate her name to be ELINA the same as her 1st born daughter......the name has all the same characteristics, the only difference being the dot of the I is further away!

In 1881 the transcribed census by LDS shows her name as ELINER NELSON (Iv'e taken a look at the original and it looks more like ELINA ? with a flashy finish to the a) heading towards ELEANOR!

Hi bryant,
You're a star to keep plugging away at this.  I agree, the names of Elvina and her children are difficult to make out.  The 1871 census is difficult to read, the 1881 definitely says Elina (I wondered if this was a different way of spelling Eleanor) but the baptism of Sarah and Alice in 1860 definitely says Elvina.
I know I will have to bear in mind all the possibilities.  My husband's grandmother was certainly Elvina.

Well, that was fun reading that!......could it have been Elvira?

And just to chuck a spanner in the works I went to school with Trevor Martin in the 60's (he died in the 70s / early 80's.

He lived with his parents in Shrub End (a 'parish' in Colchester) which adjoined Berechurch......I believe they had origins in Lexden, which seems to be born out, because I knew another Martin family in Prettygate (another area) which I understood was related to the first lot.

I have found the family in the 1861 census living at Old Pye Street, Westminster - I said they were movers!
This time she is transcribed as Elonor.

Just in case

I had a look for them at Old Pye Street (old and new) in the 1851 for Westminster, no sight of them i'm afraid.

Thanks so much for looking for them in 1851-  shame they weren't there.
The older children were born in Croydon so perhaps that's where I should look.

Still looking for Elvina MARTIN in 1841 or 1851 census.

Bryant worked very hard searching for her last year but without success.
Now the 1851 census in online I've looked for her in Essex, Croydon and everywhere else but still no luck.
Cere has looked at 1841 census for Essex and can't see her there either.

It's not helped that her christian name changes every time I find her.
She consistently says she was born in Colchester between 1826 -31
At her marriage she states that her father was John Abel MARTIN, deceased, shoemaker.

This is what I have found so far:
1855-57 living Croydon
1860 Elvina/Elwina aged 33yrs marriage to Charles NELSON St Paul’s, Chatham
1861 Elornor aged 30 living Old Pye St., Westminster
1871 Elina aged 45yrs living 9 Nelson Row, Clapham
1881 Eliner aged 54 yrs living 20 Meeting House Alley, St George in the East,
1889 Elvina aged 60 death Dec quarter

If anyone can find her I'd be so grateful.
