The world has changed since you was last looking for Elvina at the start of 2005.............

What's she doing in Birmingham aged 15........with sister Livinia!

The 1851 is now indexed (I haven't got it) and so is a lot of the 1841 (I have got it) and I can see in 1841 Surrey and Essex as well as 21 other Counties...........and if you input Elvina Martin and all variants this is the only one that shows

1841
LOWER TEMPLE STREET, BIRMINGHAM, WARWICKSHIRE
JOHN BENDERY  30  IND                      Y       (age looks like 90 to me?)
ANN AVERY         25                             Y
MASSON ROBINSON 20                       Y
ELVIRA MARTIN   15                             N
LIVINIA      "        15                             N
ELIZA JAMES        15                            N
JANE BROMLEY     15    F.S                   N
MARGARET  "        15    F.S                   N

OOOH!
That's very interesting.  It cetainly looks possible - the age is about right.
I have ancestry so I'll look for her there but I don't think she's shown up on any previous searches I've done.
Thanks Bryant. ;)

In 1851 census the only MARTIN born 1828 +/- 5yrs Colchester is Elizabeth MARTIN born 1826, a girl servant in Bermondsey.
I'm trying to use my imagination here  ;)  perhaps she was called Ellie and her employer assumed it was short for Elizabeth.

Sadly these possible entries in 1841 & 51 do not give her parents.  I can't see her on IGI.  Any ideas where I can go now with this research?

Good thinking!

Had a look for Lavinia MARTIN in 1851 but none living in Birmingham or born Colchester.  :(
Problem is she could be married by 1851.

I haven't given up on you yet............. >:(  I just think that Lavinia would be a name that the parents of Elvira? might use........it has the same ring about it?

At St Mary the virgin at the walls Colchester in 1831 a young lady was christened by the name of Emily Lavinia Martin c.17th July 1831........ parents William & Lavinia Martin.........iv'e looked for marriages of Lavinia Martin to no avail!
So I looked for Emily Lavinia Martin.........also drew a blank
So I looked for Emily L Martin

Emily L Martin married either Evan T Jones or Richard T Ward in 1866 at Newington, Sept qtr, vol 1d, page 332

now you need to look up the census of 1871 for Evan Jones or Richard Ward.........it might be easier using Emily.........
and see if it reveals anything

There's just one problem - Elvina gave her father's name as John Abel MARTIN.
Had a look on IGI for baptism of Lavinia MARTIN and found this possible:
at St Matthew, Bethnal Green
Lavinia Judith MARTIN 2 Jun 1822 born 1 May 1822
Middx - VAUS, ROBERTS, EVERSFIELD, INMAN, STAR, HOLBECK, WYATT, BICKFORD, SMITH, REDWOOD

And I had a look in 1841 and found

1841
CROUCH STREET, ST MARY AT THE WALLS, COLCHESTER
WILLIAM MARTIN  39  TAILOR  Y
LAVANA       "        39                Y
HARRIOTT    "        12                Y
EMILY          "         10               Y
FANNY         "          6                Y
WILLIAM      "         4                Y
-----------------------

What was John Abel Martin's occupation?
