William Mewburn-Wykham Park
« on: Thursday 06 March 08 09:54 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out information about William and Maria Mewburn of Wykham Park.  Maria is a distant ancestor of mine.
I have found a few bits of information within the last day or so and it is as follows:
William was born in Cleveland or Halifax (Stokesley, North Yokshire.  He became a solicitors clerk and then worked in Halifax where he set up an agency for Railway Shares.
He married Maria Tew (daughter of William Tew and Ann Wetherald),  20 June 1844 at Halifax Parish Church.  She was disowned by the Quakers for marrying William who was a Methodist.  They lived at 9 New Bond Street, Halifax which is where their 8 children were born.  In 1856 they moved to Willow Hall, Skircoat, Halifax and then in 1866/7 they moved to Wykham Park, Banbury, Oxfordshire.  This is now a boarding school for girls.  William became a Justice of the Peace and High Sheriff of Oxfordshire.  According to some other information found he was Chairman of South Eastern Railways and Star Life Insurance Companies.  He was Steward of the Wesleyan Methodist Circuit in Banbury from 1866.
If anyone knows any more information about the couple and their children i.e dates of deaths, burials etc, or if there are any errors in the information I have found, I would love to hear from you.
Sarah ;D

I now have all Census except 1871.

Hi Toby,
Thanks for you reply.  I am looking into the 1871 census entry you have given me.  I'm pretty sure that this must be another family, as Maria, the wife was born in Kent.  My Maria was born in Rochdale, Lancashire.
Thanks again for you reply.

Hi Sarah - can you give us any more info?  we really could do with dates and places of birth for both William and Maria - similar for their children,  it will help locate them in the census years which may lead to other records

Hi Debbie
William Mewburn was born c.1816-18 in Stokesley, N. Yorkshire.  I have found info saying he was from Cleveland but after examining a map I have found them to be basically one & the same.  Most of the info I have about him is in my first message.  The only thing I forgot to enter was that he died 1900.  I have managed to find all the census except 1871.

1841 Census - William (aged 18) an Attorney Clerk living with James Jacobsin Halifax.

20 June 1844 - Marriage to Maria Tew (dob 17 Mar 1822, Rochdale, Lancs)

1851 Census - The family living at 9 New Bond Street, Halifax.

1861 Census - The family living at Willow Hall, Skircoat, Halifax

1871 Census - ??????????????????

1881 Census - Moved to Wykham House, Wykham Park, Oxfordshire.

1891 Census - Still at Wykham House

1901 Census - Maria (widow) living at Wykham House with son William, his wife, various Grandchildren and umpteen servants.

I haven't yet found Maria's death.

Children of William & Maria
William Tew Mewburn born 1845 (he died shortly afterwards)
Sophie Mewburn born 1847, died 1933
Eliza Dyer Mewburn born 1848
Maria Tew Mewburn born 1850
Edith Mewburn born 1854, died 1943
Wilson Tew born 1855, died 1859)
Emily Ann Mewburn born 1857, died 1859
I think there was another child who died young.

Sophia married W S Ogden of Haslemere, Surrey
Eliza Dyer Tew married J L Barker (a Stockbroker)
Maria Tew Mewburn married Sir Mark Oldroyd MP
Edith married Robert William Perks 24 April 1878 (He was created a Baronet)

I hope you can understand my ramblings.  It has taken me an absolute age to type in, I had to have a cortizone injection today, so very painful.

I hope this info is ok.
Kind Regards
Sarah ;D

Ooh thanks Alison.  I'd gone through all kinds of variants yesterday but hadn't found Newburn.  You are a treasure.

Hi There,
I have just found your post in the Roots forum. I know something about William Mewburn. He had a house in Scotland for holidays. It was called Achnacarron on the shores of Loch Awe in Argyll & Bute. I would like to correspond with you as I too am trying to trace information on his grandchildren Meg and Guy.
Please get in touch if you can.
Thanks
