Which regiment?
« on: Saturday 08 March 08 21:30 GMT (UK) »
I have two ancestores who were soldiers. One was from Lancashire but stationed in Bristol 1811-1814 (dates that I know). On his marriage cert. and birth of his son he was 'soldier'.

Another was married in lancashire in 1931 aged 24 and was 'pensioner'. I think that means that he was pensioned from the army.

How do I go about finding out which regiments that served in?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Hi  French :)

For your 1811 onwards soldier you would have to visit the National Archives at Kew, or hire a researcher to do this for you.  The Service Documents  for those discharged to pension between 1760 - 1854 are under WO97; and for Royal Hospital Chelsea Discharge Documents of pensioners between 1782 - 1887 under WO 121.

For soldiers discharged between the above dates you can search under the name of the soldier.

As for your next man, judging by his age and the year of 1931, it seems likely that any Service documents would still be held by the Veterans Agency.  You would need to provide sufficient proof to obtain the records.  See here:

Thanks for the info. I made a mistake though for my second man. I meant 1831, not 1931 so I suppose that the two would have the same source.

Hi French

Yes, the same would apply for both your soldiers.  At least it makes it even more worthwhile I think, when you have a few soldiers to research. :D
