DNA genealogy
« on: Tuesday 11 March 08 10:28 GMT (UK) »
I have just been watching a very interesting documentary concerning the use of DNA.
It claims to be able to give you the results of  your origins.
They had so many folk claiming to be pure English
One of whom was the rather annoying tabloid hound Barry Bushel.
To his horror, which you could clearly see in his face
This fine upstanding English Gent, has sub Sahara African genes.
Has anyone ever done one of these tests
If so how accurate do you feel they are
Or is it just another money spinner
To have us genealogy fanatics off
As if we don't pay out enough already. ;D

Hi, I have just had the results of my test with, National Geographic, The Genographic Project, bought for me by my son for Christmas, It is an ongoing world wide projectMy Haplogroup R1b(P25), my earliest ancestor(M168) ,time of emergence 50,000 years ago. Africa. there is 6 pages of the route that my ancestors took to reach these Isles, via saxony.and different markers in my DNA, this is an ongoing project over 10 years with regular updates, It will not tell you if you are related to others of the same surname etc, Best Wishes Clive

Hi Clive sounds good stuff
Must be interesting
Are you happy with your results.
It is good to see if you are as English I you think
I have just been watching more of the program I spoke
Would you believe Carol Thatcher daughter of thee iron woman
Her results showed,
They had a 24% origin from Arab stock

Whooa  heheheh
Bet the Tories wouldn't like that.
Another woman was interviewed before her results came through
She made the statement
To be English
You need to prove your family has lived here for at least a thousand years
When hers came back
It showed she was from Turkish stock
She exclaimed
I always wondered why I felt at home on holiday in Turkey ;D

I thought archeologists or similar had decided that we are all descended from a few Africans.  Some of these first people then took different journeys across Western Europe, some into the East and a few got as far as China.  I'm sure there was a TV programme about this not long ago.

I don't think these tests work for women.

Yes I remember reading something like that myself Lizzie
I suppose its if you are willing to believe these tests also.
What I think this program set out to do was
Put racists in their place. you could tell the program was heading that way.
A few folk were very out spoken about how English they were
And what you needed to be seen as English in their eyes
They do seem to have a maternal and paternal search
One chap a so called comedian who goes on stage and hides his bits with assorted balloons
Was very outspoken before the tests
But when his came back he was more Russian than English.
One Lady threatened the program
Because she did not like the outcome of her tests ;D

Hi Heyesie,I am very happy with the results, I decided to do the male line, On some tests on the female side they can trace your ancestors to one of the 7 daughters of EVE, Thefirst genetic marker in my lineage probably lived in northeast Africa around Ethiopia, Kenya, Thats my marker 168 , my marker173 is particularly concentrated in northern France and the Brish Isles where it was carried by ancestors who had weathered the Ice Age in Spain, my marker 343; direct descendants of Cro-manon.I hope to do the female test later, I know the 7 daughters have been given names and there are a few good books dealing with the subject. There are a total of 7 markers in my results I have just given a couple as there are about 7 A4 pages plus map. Best Wishes Clive

  Hi all ,
I have just read this thread with great interest , is this test the one where they tell where you originate from with the respect of finding which of your family line you take after most (by that i mean which area of the country your ancesters originated ) and if you  take after the "SMITH or JONES " line most , sorry if i'v confused you but i once watched a program where the did a blood test , sent it off to be analized and the person was told they originated from a certain part of the country hence been able to see which side of the family they took after most .
I would certainly be interested in gettting this done
                         gah

Hi, The test uses swab samples taken from the mouth, not blood, It will show the migration route taken by distant ancestors , not to see if you are related to someone from another town or country. It reveals lines of genes, not identities of specific ancestors. Look at ,WWW. NATIONALGEOGRAPHIC.COM/GENOGRAPHIC.Also the book that I read was,DNA and Family History by Chris Pomery, there is another book, Y:The Descent of Men by Steve Jones. I cannot understand how some people can take offence at being told where they originated from, the amazing thing is that we survived at all, and should be thankful at that. Best Wishes Clive

This is interesting, but I thought we ALL originated from early homo sapiens in the Rift Valley area of Kenya/Ethiopia!

For myself, these tests are a little too vague, the more detailed ones you can do in a one-name study are another thing to look at.

Am just reading the Pomeroy book.
