Hi Louthlass
That is all interesting, especially the intrigue about the dispute! I wonder what that was about?

I have been talking to someone interested in Clayworth history and a Clayworth resident, this weekend and he says that Clayworth Woodhouse existed before Clayworth itself. Does this fit in with your information?
The working farm that is at Clayworth Woodhouse now has been built since 1980?

Hello Hibiscus girl,

The old house was empty for a number of years before it was demolished in the late 1980's. The new farmhouse was build all in the parish of Beckingham, further to the east. In the 19c the farm was owned by the Anderson family of Lea Hall Gainsborough.  through decent to Sir joseph Laycock of Wiseton. Tenants from 1900 were Smith Belton
Arthur Havercroft
Fred Bell
Ingall
Prescott
Chas Lundy
I do have a photo of the old farmhouse dated about 1946.

Hello Louthlass
That is an interesting list of names as three  of the surnames Bell, Lundy and Ingall were living in Clayworth village in the 1960's.

I also know of the late Sir 'Jo" and have met his son and wife Sir Robert  and Lady Laycock. I wonder how the descendant line led from the Anderson family to the Laycocks?

I have just been told that there is probably a public footpath which leads to a graveyard at Clayworth Woodhouse. Do you know anything of this?
Would you like to share the photo of the old farmhouse? I would really like to see it.

Hello Hibiscusgirl,

There is a public footpath from Clayworth to Clayworth Woodhouse, the post was delivered by foot from that way until a few years ago. It has been said, there was supposed to be a burial ground in the corner of a field to the south west of the mediaeval village, this as far as I know has never been verified.
Iwill share my photograph At the moment it is to large to send! I will try to sort this out.

Louthlass

Hello Louthlass
Fancy the post being delivered along that public footpath!
I wonder if anyone else knows of the burial ground reading this thread?
Look forward to seeing the photo when you have time Louthlass.

A few years ago I delivered Yellow Pages(never again). Clayworth was one of the villages where I had to deliver to.  I was left with one copy and could not find where it was to be delivered so went to the local post office in Clayworth and the lady there said it was along "dead mans lane" and was reached via the path near the church and led to a graveyard.  Needless to say I did not deliver the book but left it at the post office to be collected on pension day!!!

Hello Barbara
I wonder if you are referring to the lane at the back of St. Peters Church Clayworth?  There is a cemetery there, and a lane which ran alongside and used to be called Death Lane. There was and is only one home at the end of Death Lane as far as I am aware, which used to be occupied by Sir Robert Laycock's gamekeeper and family. I believe the house has been modernised in recent years, but I knew it well and been there often.

Hello Hibiscus Girl,

Here is a copy of a copy so the quality isn't great, but you will be able to see the house and numerous buildings to the old premises. Sorry it has been so long.

Hello Louthlass
I hadn't expected the property to be so large. It looks quite picturesque from the front.
It was well worth the wait and thank you very much for posting it.
