Suffolk Marriages 1766 - KNEVETT/FRENCH
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 02:22 GMT (UK) »

Is it possible for someone to look up the marriage of Henry Knevett of Eye
(age 24) and Elizabeth French of Oakley (age 20).    Date I have is 3rd
April 1766.     Would parents names be given?
I am also looking for any children of the marriage.
    Hopeful anticipation - Patricia (down under-Australia)     :) :D :)

 Would parents names be given?

I'm afraid not. :(  Witnesses were given from 1753 but it was very unusual for any parental information to be given.  The registers were pre-printed with no category space for this.

Required information in the registers from 1753 - 1837 was:

* Names of bride and groom
*Date of Marriage
* Whether by banns or licence
* Marital Status (Single or Widowed)
* Whether or not they were of the parish. (If not of the parish, the last parish of settlement should be given)
*Names of 2 Witnesses

It might be worth contacting the volunteer who offers lookups from the Eye Registers at The Suffolk Surname List to check for this marriage and any baptisms.

Hi Flowers,

my 4 x g grandmother was called Elizabeth French she was married to my 4 x grandfather (Edward Pain) in the Parish of Barrow Suffolk in 1797 Elizabeth was a widow she was married previously to Edward French in 1792 in Bury St. Edmunds  her maiden name was Lindell. Elizabeth was born in 1772 in Barrow in Suffolk her parents names are John and Ann Lydell. I know the dates are out, but the name Elizabeth French just jumped out at me.  Edwad Pain had been married twice before one of his previous wifes only lived 5 months after the marriage and died of Fever.  Elizabeth and Edward went on to have 12 children together one of them my 3 x g grandfather James.

It would be lovely to find someone who is following the same tree.

Kind regards Susan

Hello

As you probably already know by now  :)

Henry Knevett was the son of John Knevett, Grazier of Gasthorpe Norfolk (from his Cantab Alum listing).

He was born 1 Mar 1742, went to Bury Grammar School in Suffolk then to Cambridge.

He was a vicar (of various types) in Suffolk and died on 30 Dec 1822.

I think that he and Elizabeth had at least 11 children, and have traced a couple of them for several subsequent generations.

Sadly, whilst there are several direct descendants trying to trace his ancestors, I don't know of anyone who has got any more information about John of Gasthorpe (or anyone earlier).
