Elizabeth Perkins of Wokingham
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 20:01 GMT (UK) »
My gggGrandmother Elizabeth Perkins was born in approx. 1812 in Wokingham she married Thomas Bedford 12/10/1837 in Wokingham and died in 1885 again in Wokingham her father's name was Thomas her mother's name was Elizabeth and came from Sherbourne Dorset and was born in approx. 1791.

Would anybody have anymore information on Elizabeth's parents such as when Thomas was born and Elizabeth's maiden name.

Hi,

If you don't mind me asking why do you think Elizabeth's mother is Elizabeth from Sherbourne Dorset?

I have found these two christenings on the IGI,

Elizabeth PERKINS
Christening:  07 JUL 1805   Wokingham, Berkshire
Father:  Thomas PERKINS
Mother:  Elizabeth

Elizabeth PERKINS
Christening:  17 MAR 1811   Wokingham, Berkshire
Father:  Thomas PERKINS
Mother:  Catherina

Elizabeth BEDFORD consistently says she was born 1809-1812 so I would think the earlier Elizabeth is the wrong one. If the later Elizabeth could be correct then this looks like her mother Catherine,

Catharine EELS
Christening:  12 FEB 1786   Hawley, Hampshire
Father:  William EELS
Mother:  Hannah

Thomas PERKINS
Spouse:  Catherine ELES
Marriage:  03 MAY 1810   Wokingham, Berkshire

In 1841 it looks like Elizabeth & Thomas BEDFORD's son William is living/staying with Grandma :)

1841  HO107/28/15  f.9  p.13  Wokingham
Peach St

Catherine PERKINS    55                 No
William       "  "         20                 Ys

William BEDFORD        2                 Ys

Catherine PERKINS  Wid  65  Alms House Laundress    Hants

Hi Daisy

I'm sure your facts are correct.
I  found an Elizabeth Perkins in the 1851-61 census who was a widow and seemed to fit the bill.
I was jumping to conclusions.
But you must be correct because William the grandson of Catherine is back with his family in the 1851 census age 12 and living on Peach St.
Incidentally on the 1841 census Catherine's husband Thomas is the last name on the previous page.
Thank you for all the information i am very grateful.
Regards
Buzz

The Perkins family were fairly significant in Wokingham in the second half of the 19th century.

One ran the Old Curiosity Shop in Denmark Street in 1880.  By 1900 his sons were running theWokingham Motor and Cycle Works in the Market Place and Peach Street.  Later they ran the garage in Broad Street.

In 1937 Frank Stanley Perkins was mayor of Wokingham.

These may of course not be your family but it seemed worth posting the information.

Hi David

Thank you for the information.
Some of my ancestors whether Perkins or Bedford lived on Peach St.  through out the 1800's.

If you wanty more just say.  One of their descendants used to live next door to me.  The two brothers who ran the motor and cycle works were Alan Perkins and Eric Perkins .

I live about a mile from the centre of Wokingham and many of the buildings haven't changed in the last 100 years.

Hi David
 Thank you for your offer.
The Perkins that i'm trying to find more information on is Thomas who in the 1841 census is as Daisy points out  living on Peach St. age 55 so he was born approx. 1786 in the county.
Daisy states when he married.
And i believe he died Sept. 1/4 1847 in Wokingham.
If you have any more information on Thomas or his ancestors i would be very grateful.

Sorry,

I am failing to get back to the middle of the 19th century with the Perkins' history in Wokingham.  I have found that some of the family were in Tasmania for a period and I can't get back beyond that block.  It is not helped by the fact that I can't get any accurate dates.

Hi David

Thank you for your reply.

I'd never heard in the family that someone may have travelled to Tasmania.
