Surname SCOTT
« on: Wednesday 12 January 05 08:45 GMT (UK) »
Hi all,
In my GreatGrandfather's obituary it states that he had sons in Ireland, Canada and S Africa. I have found a son in South Africa and now wish to find out which one(s) went to Ireland.
My GreatGrandfather was John Bullen SCOTT and he died in 1914. He lived in Hilgay, Norfolk., England.
Contenders for the son(s) who went to Ireland are -
John Thomas born 1877 last found on the 1891 census in England
George born 1873 and last found on the 1891 census in England
Frederick John born 1863 and last found on the 1891 census in England.

My mum could remember her mum talking about a brother who had gone to Ireland, married an Irish girl and raised a family. There was some trouble in Ireland and he wanted to send his children to Norfolk to live with my grandmother. They never arrived and noone knows what happened to any of them.

Any ideas where I should go from here?
Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Your best bet that I can see is to search for the 2 possible sons in the marriage indexes post 1891 in Ireland. These are  available in the Dublin GRO or on film at your local family history centre.

Did any of them have a profession that may be documented e.g. solicitor, soldier, tradesman?

Thanks Kate,
I'll check what records are available next time I go  my local Record Office.
No tradesmen I don't think - just agricultural labourers.
