The reason I said Jessie ( for his wife ) on my first post was because - in very faint writing on the cemetery records ( when I went to the cemetery ) I thought it said buried with Jessie A ... but I'm wondering if it was daughter Anna J .... and if his son was a mortician .... that was handy wasn't it ??  ::)

I thought if I can get the names of the family on the photo .... and a round about date  ..... !!

I could maybe try for English census too !  :-\

1900 Census didn't say he was naturalised in 1845 - just that he arrived in US 1845 and was in 1900 naturalised.   Didn't say when.

Found a 'Ali' Sutherland    40     b. Scotland  at Denver, Arapahoe, Kansas Territory (?) on ancestry transcriptions for 1860 but he's not on the page that comes up (no other Sutherlands transcribed there).

Going to have to give up now - my mouse just about given out on me.   Will have to get a new one tomorrow.

Annette

With four boys showing in the photo, and only 2 males identified so far  and only 2 daus shown of  6 named in census, right??

Francis    1884 ???   If a boy and not a girl  and Could he have had the profession of undertaker @ 16??
George   1872

Still missing quite a bit of history actually......  if these are the 2 eldest daus then photo is maybe 1875-ish???

Anybody looked at it on the Photo Restoration board to determine the clothing styles ??

Wife looks "ancient"  but maybe not even 40??  Yikes!

Annette blew out her mouse on this one!!!

Actually,  going back to re-look at the photo again,  Anna, the wife, doesn't really look "ancient". By the standards of the time and looking at other photos of women 30-40 in that era,  she looks pretty good and about right, don't you think??   Harder with the men because of the beards.   The oldest dau shown probably 12-13 ???

So your 1st statement dating the photo sometime in the 1870's seems really close.

Will be looking to see if the experts on the photo board can pin it down.

I'm always fascinated by their expertise over there!!

Most women in those days looked pretty harrassed unless they had a bit of money !!  :-\

and this family seems pretty well dressed I think ! .... I think I'll ask Old Rowley to have a look !

So ..... the census don't really match the picture do they ?  :-\
