Rev. William Thorburn
« on: Wednesday 12 March 08 23:45 GMT (UK) »
Looking for info. on Rev. William Thorburn and his family. Born about 1766, died  1846. He married Ann Mckenzie and are said to have had 9 children. David James Staig Thorburn who was one of them is my ggggrandfather. I have found mention of other children--Lillian/Lilias who never married and died 1846, James Stewart a barrister, and Georgina Mckenzie who also died in 1846. Rev. William preached for 54 years and I think was minister of Tronqueer Church. He died in Tronqueer and I think may have also been born there. Any info greatly appreciated.

 Hello crackpot,

Could only find these 2 births to the couple on the IGI - an admittedly quick search - 20 yrs either side of 1800 - all counties.

:O)

GEORGINA MCKENZIE THORBURN
Christening: 18 NOV 1808 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scotland

 MARY THORBURN -
Christening: 05 AUG 1803 Troqueer, Kirkcudbright, Scotland

And a description of Torqueer parish - with the reverends name in brackets.

The following link gives a nice precis.  Apparently there would appear to be some stuff in print from him.  Appears to have led a very 'full' life   :O)

Hello crackpot, I am a descendant of William Thorburn's sister Mary and I've got a bit of info.
The Rev was born 18 Aug 1766 at Kelton; Dumfries parish; father William Thorburn mother Agnes Richardson of Heck near Lochmaben. he was 6th of 12 children; who mostly did very well for themselves. My ancestors were the ones who went bankrupt!
The Rev had 10 children (that I know of) mariane, Nancy, William,Lilias Staig, Georgina Mackenzie, Mary, Kenneth Mackenzie, David Staig, Georgina Mackenzie (2nd), and James Stewart.
The Rev was buried in Troqueer Churchyard just inside the gate; a short square memorial with inscriptions on all 4 sides. I don't have a picture of him and neither has the church; but I haven't stopped looking.
There's more if you want.
