Looking for help pls. with SHANAHAN family from Askeaton 1780s-->
« on: Thursday 13 March 08 06:31 GMT (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters, Hi from sunny Queensland, Australia.

Michael SHANAHAN married Mary NEIL and had three known children:-

1.John SHANAHAN born either 1814 or 1816 Askeaton, died 1859 Maitland NSW Australia {we don't have death certificate} married  (marriage date unknown) Isabella BOYD of Newry, Co.Down, Northern Ireland and raised a large family of 10 children in New South Wales, Australia settling Black Creek, Branxton, Elderslie.  Children; Mary (married HOGAN), Bridget (married WHEELER), James, Thomas (married KENNA)*, John, Isabella (married 1.LANGLANDS, 2.FARRELL, 3.KEDWELL), Susannah, Jane and two not yet known about.

2.Johanna SHANAHAN born 1821 Askeaton, died aged 27 years in 1848 buried Branxton Cemetery, New South Wales, Australia.

3.Mary SHANAHAN born 1826 Askeaton, died aged 21 years in 1847.

*This is the line of descendancy we are researching.
Note: Religion was most probably Roman Catholic.

What I'd like to know is where in Askeaton specifically these SHANAHANs came from.  We're planning a trip to Ireland this year.

Thanking you in advance.

Sincerely,
Alison.

I know your request was sent 11 years ago, but I wonder if you have learnt anything about the Shanahan family since then?
I am a descendant of Johanna Shanahan and have been doing a little bit on her and her siblings.
I actually visited Askeaton and Castle Hewson last year and have a few photographs of the house the Shanahans lived in before moving to Black Creek in 1841.
