Winwick Juction Rail Crash 1934
« on: Friday 14 March 08 15:44 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find some information regarding the victims of the Winwick Junction Rail Crash, 28th Sept 1934.

I am told my great grandfather, Richard Aaron Atherton, may have been involved in this accident.  I am told he did receive compensation from the rail company regarding his injuries.  Also he was thought of as a bit of a "hero" throughout the disaster.

I can only find general information regarding this accident.  Does anyone know, or can suggest,  where I might be able to access more in depth knowledge to confirm his involvement.

Many thanks.
Kim

Hello Kim
I don't know whether you have this information but if you google "Winwick rail crash" it will give you the website "WIKIPEDIA".
This has a report of the crash and also on the external links there is a fully comprehensive report by the Inspector of railways and his findings .

Other than that I would suggest the local papers for that area be searched .

Hi Eric

Yes I did find that link in the beginning of my search.  Unfortunately, it only gave information of whose fault it was.  But many thanks anyway.

Any idea which papers would of covered this area at the time?

Many thanks

Regarding rail accidents you could try www.railwaysarchives.co.uk
they have started listing rail accidents.

A newspaper to look at would be the Warrington Guardian, however were their archives are kept I do not know, you could try Warrington Library.

Hope this helps

Dear Geoff

Many thanks for the link.  Unfortunately, they are unable to give family history information regarding victims of rail accidents.  They can only give information if your relative was the cause of the accident, or involved in an accident as part of the rail staff!!

Needless to say, I shall try the local papers and see if I can get any further with my quest there.

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Regards
Kim

Harriet Ann Anderton nee Hughes was killed in the crash. She died 28/9/1934 aged 39. I found the Leigh Journal the best newspaper for information. Today we have been looking for the memorial stone but not found it yet!
