1851 Census Hastings
« on: Wednesday 12 January 05 16:13 GMT (UK) »
Could somebody please see if they can locate the following family in Hastings in 1851:
Edward Coote   38  b.Hellingly
Sarah Coote      34  b.Hastings
Elizabeth            11
George                8
Alfred                   5

It's possible that there could be another child Maria.
Many thanks,
Lesley

Hi
I have found the following in 1851 census index Vol4 Hastings -St.Clement & St.Mary in the Castle compiled by C. June Barnes @ Wellington Mews Hastings.

COOT, Alfred James, Son unmarried aged 4

COOT,Edward , Head Married Aged 37 occ. Lab

COOT, Elizabeth Jane, Daughter, Aged 10

COOT, George Edward, son, unmarried aged 7

Coot, Maria Ann, Daughter, unmarried aged 1

Coot,Sarah, Wife aged 34 no occupation.

Wellington Mews was located in St.Mary in the Castle Parish which may help when checking other sources.

Hope this helps let me know if you want any other Hastings census checks as I can check Hastings from 1831 - 1901.

Sorry
I missed out the fact that  Edward was born at 'Herringley'(SIC) obviously wrongly transcribed by census enumerator and that all of the other members of the household were born in Hastings.

Many thanks for that information. The surname was Coat, in 1841 which meant it has taken quite a while to track them down. I am not exactly sure where they fit in, but were living with my 4xgt grandparents in 1841, and it is possible that Sarah was there daughter. Now that I have that information confirmed, will send off for the birth certificate of one of the children.
Thanks again for the help,
Lesley

Just to let you know I had a sudden flash of inspiration when I looked at the information again, and realised I knew who she was. Have just checked it out, and she is the niece of my 4x gtgrandparents!

Glad to be of some help.
I have found by experience that the names you think are going to be easy are often most difficult! The more unusual are often altered.

I am quite lucky with my some of my Hastings ancestors in that they were fishermen and have been in Hastings for centuries, it's the agr.labs that have moved around that have caused me problems! Good luck with your searching and get in touch if you need any other checks. This is a great web-site!
