schooling in 1871, Kington

Hello,

would anyone have any info about schools in 1871. John D Morgan was 13 and was living in a house in Kington with 6 other pupils. The head of the household was a schoolmaster.

Johns father used to be the chemist in Tregaron but had died a few years earlier.
 
John later went on to be an apprentice druggist in Bideford Devon in 81 and91 and appears on the census in 1901 as a chemist/druggist.

Would this house have been a private school and would there be any records about them.   

Could someone please tell me how apprenticeships worked. How would he have got to be an apprentice in Devon and how many years would it take?

I believe  john  d Morgan  was the  head of lady hawkins school  at this time so you could try their web site or email the school as i know  they have  the school history on site  as one of my former teacher there wrote it. so in essence if it was this school he was  at a grammar school and unless he had a scholarship  would have been  a fee paying boarder  the school house still exists  and  you should be able to get hold of photos of it on the internet if not let me know  and I'll get onefor you  I will also double check the info i have given you with the school book ( my dad has a copy)

Thanks for the information. At  the time John D was a pupil the schoolmaster in 1871 was Henry Everard and he lived there with his family. I can't make out the name of the address at the moment. It is ........House

Would the school house have had another name at this time other than Lady Hawkins School?

I have tried the Lady Hawkins School website but the ony photo is of the school as it is now. Have I looked at the wrong place? Will keep looking. Very interesting history of the school.

Kington History Society c/o The Kington Centre, Bridge Street,  Kington HR5 3DJ or tell 01544 230427, have many thousands of records on Kington and can help. There were several private schools for boys and girls at various times in the C19th.
