Crown & Sceptre Hotel, Cwmsyfiog, completed
« on: Sunday 16 March 08 16:40 GMT (UK) »
Here is another public house I hope someone can help locate on the 1901c.  The Crown & Sceptre Hotel in Cwmsyfiog [main road]was run by Mrs Harrhy [Harry] in the 1920s.  Was she there in 1901? There was a son named James, born c.1897.

Thanks in advance
Roy

Hi Roy,

I have the census returns for my gt gt gt grandfather that show he is living in TCrown and Sceptre Cottage. Perhaps this was adjoined to the Inn? The census is 1901, but is in the Llantilio Pertholey district. Is this the same one you are researching?

Regards,

Reaybo :)

Hi Reaybo
Thanks for getting in touch and the offer of a copy of 1901C.  Unfortunately not the one I am researching which is in Bedwellty Parish, Monmouthshire.

Best regards
Roy

Hi.  I am researching my family history and have discovered that my gt gt gt grandfather, Job George, built the Crown & Sceptre Hotel in Cwmsyfiog.  Do you know what happened to the Hotel?  Does it still exist?

Also researching much family from Brithdir, Cwmsyfiog, Llandsadwrn, etc.etc..

Regards,
Jules

Hi Juliaca
I must apologise for this very tardy reply; I have only just found it.

Sadly the hotel was demolished but I may be able to get you a photo.  You say you are researching Brithdir & Cwmsyfiog families; I have a great deal of information on the villages, particular Brithdir and can help you with any queries you have.  Please get in touch and I will endeavour to help you with your research.

Regards, Roy

I would be interested if somebody had any old photo's of the crown at Cwmsyfiog, I was there when my grandparents were landlords at the pub, I was born there in 1961, and vaguely remember the place, I tried to track it down about 20 years back, but all there was left was a single wall, and the grounds appeared to be used as some sort of builders yard.

Thankyou Roy..

Apologies for not replying earlier, but the replies went to my sons account, You are correct about E.J.Harrhy, they occupied the pub directly before my Grandfather took the tenancy in 1960.

I have also managed to get a single photo of the place which sort os straddled 2 roads (upper road and lower road).

I have also managed work out its location in relation to the chapel libanus, which is about 30 meters away on the other side of upper road going away from new tredegar.

I am coming back to the UK next month, when I will be tracing the exact spot where the pub stood

Hi All,

I now live in the plot where the hotel was and would love to know more on the history here. Any photos would be great too.

Regards

Ross
