Is Norton near Cefnllys?
« on: Wednesday 19 March 08 06:07 GMT (UK) »
On the 1851 England Census Elizabeth Bayless lists her birthplace as Norton, Radnorshire, Wales (about 1765).

Her maiden name was Jones per her marriage information.

I found an Elizabeth Jones on the IGI in a record submitted by a member of the LDS Church as having been born in 1764 in Cefnllys, Radnor, Wales.

Does anyone know if Norton and Cefnllys are close enough that this could be the same person?

Cathy

Hi
Try the National Library of Wales. They will usually do look ups free and then charge for a copy of the entry. It might be worth getting a look up done for Norton and Cefnllys for those years.

Kind regards

Thank you for the information Alan and Sue.

18 miles seems a far enough distance that someone would not state they were from Norton if they were actually born in Cefnllys unless Cefnllys was a small village and Norton was a larger town.  In Googling Cefnllys, it appears it went into decline in the 1800's so maybe it hardly existed when the 1851 Census was taken.

If you (or anyone else) is familiar with the area, can you give me your thoughts?

Do you think the National Library of Wales could shed some light on this or do you know of a genealogical or history association that might be able to help?

Thanks.

Cathy

Hi Cathy
I have ancestors from Cefnllys and the Norton area in my view the area did not really decline until 1881 onwards. I have had one off look ups done by the NLW - they have an online form. As you know the biggest problem really is the surname Jones and Elizabeth was terribly common at that time too. I have the same trouble in my  Davies line

1841 census does she still give the same place of birth?

My advice in the end is to have a search of the Norton parish records. Powys record office has them but charges are quite strong. I used a researcher called Richard Meredith who was very good based in the USA but seems to have disappeared. If you do not want to pay a researcher the only way is to use the Mormon LDS centre local to you and order up the Norton registers. It can take a couple of months to arrive from the states. Personally I would try the NLW first.

Like you say if she states Norton as place of birth and I think this is your starting point. In the end only reference to the parish registers will give an answer. Of course her parents could have been non -conformist........

If it were me I would try the NLW first.

Good luck -wish I could have been more help

Cefnllys is also the name of one of the five Hundeds of Radnorshire. It's eastern edge comes fairly close to Norton.
So you could guess that your ancestor came from somewhere just to the west of Norton

Sue & KMO:

Thanks for the feedback.

To answer Sue's question, I cannot locate her in the 1841 Census.

I am in California and have an LDS center 5 minutes from my house.  I have ordered Parish Register films for several other areas (takes 2-3 weeks) and had luck finding information on them that wasn't on the indexes so I think I will order the films for Norton and Cefnllys to see what I find.

I will also try the NLW as well.

Thank you for all the advice.

Hi Cathy,

I think I may have found Elizabeth Baylis on the 1841 census for Wales.

She is listed as living at Bridge, Norton, Radnorshire with....

Thomas Lucas 55  Shoemaker bn not in this county
Sarah Lucas  55                       bn not in this county
Ann Lucas  13                           bn this county
Elizabeth Baylis  75                  bn not in this county
Elizabeth Hill  40                       bn not in this county
Sharlotte Hill 2                          bn in this county

Hope that helps,

Suzy
